Class Experience

The Divergent book series is filled with enriching themes, and complicated characters. There are so many great elements for discussion. Each class will cover the assigned chapters of the book: Divergent by Veronica Roth. The book should be read before students come to class. In class we will discuss the theme in the book including: loyalty, power, personal choice, friendship, and identity. I will have questions prepared to guide the students, however, my teaching style is to allow the learners to lead the discussion when able to. It is helpful if each student participates in the discussion, and in doing so will take ownership of their own opinion and power of voice.
If there is extra time at the end of the discussion, we will log into a Kahoot! Divergent trivia game for some extra fun.
The first meeting we discuss the first ten chapters of the book. The second meeting we discuss the next ten, etc. There are four books in total if you want to join us for each one. Here is the schedule for reading.

Parental Guidance
There is violence and gore in the books. It is up to each parent to decide if this book series is a good fit for their child. I often look up books on the website Common Sense Media for a better understand of what a book contains. Better yet, if you have the time, also read the book so see what your child is reading.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
For over five years I have taught classes that were heavy in literature, and led book discussions in each of them. The classes included scholars who are ages 12 through 18. One of those classes was an "Aulting" class where we read higher level books on financial choices. The rest of the literature has spanned from Shakespeare to the Giver. I have read the Hunger Games book series three times (except for the new one) and will re-read them along with the scholars in order to adequately lead the class. I have also read a book club with adults for the past three years.
