Week 1
Lesson 1
NO reading required before the first class
We will learn about the authors and illustrator of the series, learn how to keep a vocabulary journal, and look at the map to see where we will be traveling over the semester. Look at each of the books we will be reading. We will draw a picture of Flat Stanley going on a trip. We will talk about where we might want to go on a trip and what we might pack in a suitcase and play a memory game about "What's Missing?" from the suitcase.
Lesson 2
Read The Mount Rushmore Calamity chapters 1 - 4 before class
We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore. We will draw our own Mount Rushmore about people important to us. We will play a word jumble game.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Read The Mount Rushmore Calamity chapters 5 - 7 before class
We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about Calamity Jane, Wild Bill Hickok, and the Gold Rush. We will play a game and look for gold nuggets under Dolch sight words. We will sequence our story.
Lesson 4
The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery Chapters 1 - 5 before class
We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about the Great Pyramid of Giza and grave robbers. We will write our names in hieroglyphics. We will play a word jumble game.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery Chapters 6 - 9 before class
We will learn a little bit about the Sahara Desert, camels, and the Nile River. We will play with mazes and solve the riddles. We will sequence our story.
Lesson 6
The Japanese Ninja Surprise Chapters 1 - 4 before class
We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about Ninjas and Bonsai Trees. We will color and decorate our bonsai tree. We will play a word jumble game
 Week 4
Lesson 7
The Japanese Ninja Surprise Chapters 5 - 9 before class
We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about the Tea Ceremony and Japan's Bullet Trains. We will talk about the statement, "Being flat is what you are. It is not who you are." We will create a self-portrait and write about what is important to us. We will sequence our story.

The Intrepid Canadian Expedition Chapters 1 - 4 before class
We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about the Northern Lights and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer. We will do a Venn diagram between a moose and a bison. We will play a word jumble game.

The Intrepid Canadian Expedition Chapters 5 - 8 before class
We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about Niagara Falls, Hockey, and The Stanley Cup. We will play a memory game. We will sequence our story.
Lesson 10
 The Amazing Mexican Secret Chapters 1 - 4 before class
We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will look at matadors and talk about bullfighting. We will color a pinata. We will play a word jumble game.
 Week 6

The Amazing Mexican Secret Chapters 5 - 8 before class
We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about the ancient Mayan Civilization. We will talk about what La Abuela says, talk about what that means, and do an activity. We will sequence our story.
Lesson 12
The African Safari Discovery Chapters 1 - 4 before class
We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will learn about Mount Kilimanjaro and Lake Victoria.  We will play a footprint-to-animal matching game. We will play a word jumble game.

We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension. We will talk about the savanna and the animals that live there. We will play a cause-and-effect game. We will sequence the story.

We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about the Giant Panda and the Great Wall of China. We will create a craft of the Great Wall of China. We will play a word jumble game.

The Flying Chinese Wonders Chapters 5 - 8 before class
We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about Mt. Huangshan, the Terra Cotta Army, and the Yangtze River. We will look at some of Confucius's quotes and talk about what they mean. We will talk about what it means to be a third wheel. We will sequence our story.

We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about Uluru or Ayers Rock, and the Outback. We will learn a little Australian slang and play a game Finding Joeys. We will play a word jumble game.

We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about the Great Barrier Reef, the Sydney Opera House, and boomerangs. We will do a crossword puzzle. We will sequence the story.

We will go over vocabulary and reading comprehension questions. We will talk about George Washington, Betsy Ross, and the Washington Monument. We will play Hangman. We will play a word jumble game.

Lesson 32
NO reading required for the last class
We will do a review and discuss the books. Which were our favorites? Which character did we like best? Would be change anything in the books? Were they all similar or different? We will draw a picture of our favorite book in the series. Why did the author choose these places? Would you like to visit any of them? We will play a matching game of the book series.
