Learn 3d Modeling with the FREE Blender application in this week long summer camp! This class will teach students how to model a neighborhood complete with houses, streets, trees, plants, and more!

Class experience

5 lessons//1 Week
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Modeling the street and lawn
Students will need to have Blender already installed and running for their first day of class. We will use modeling tools to create a base lawn, street, and sidewalk as the foundation for the rest of the scene. This will include using the loop cut, extrusion, scale, move and rotation tools. Scale will be emphasized so students start thinking about how a character might move about the 3d space in a movie or game.
Lesson 2
Modeling a modern house
Next we will model a modern house complete with different extensions like a garage and multiple rooms. We will then add the roof (flat and slanted are covered) and other base structures. Tools used will include extrude, loop cut, rotation, scale, move, bridge, inset, and bevel. We will continue our exploration of materials including how to re-use and alter existing materials.
Lesson 3
Add details to the house
Now it's time for adding architectural elements. We will cut doors and windows into the base mesh using the loop cut tool, extrude the faces inward, and use the inset tool. We will also layer items on top of the base mesh such as chimneys and vents. As students work they will be encouraged to explore the backstory of their neighborhood to give additional character as if someone actually lives there.
Lesson 4
Modeling plants and trees
With our house completed we can now add plants and trees of different types. We will cover how to create base props that can be duplicated and then altered quickly for a variety of iterations. Students will use the proportional editing tool for this process to stretch the mesh for a more organic look and feel.
Lesson 5
Adding extra details
During the final day we will cover how to add fences, lamp posts, mailboxes, satellite dishes, trash cans, clouds, and other props that can enliven the scene with character. They will then learn how to light their scene with a sun light, prepare it for rendering by finding the right camera composition, and then render an image of their final work that they can share with anyone.
The main goal is to make sure students can understand and use the techniques introduced in class successfully on their own time. The focus is on progress, not perfection.

I have been teaching art (animation, illustration, sculpture, painting, and digital art) to elementary and teenage students consistently for over 25 years. My teaching includes 4 years as a public school teacher, 15 years as the owner of the Creative Art Network (after-school, during school, and summer programs) and 12 years as an artist in residence (mural painting focus). I've also been designing elaborate video tutorials since 2008 for a large variety of mediums.

I love what I do and that passion drives my ongoing learning. I’ve studied traditional art through Cornish College of the Arts, Western Wa University, and a variety of other classes. The source of my ongoing digital art training (Primarily 2d digital illustration and animation and 3D modeling and animation) is through Animation Mentor, Think Tank Training Center of Canada, CG Masters academy, CG Boost Academy, Udemy, Skillshare, InLearning, and much more
