Class Experience

This 8-week class is aimed to give teens ages 13-18, with no piano background, a good foundation into reading and playing music on piano, even if they already know how to read music from another instrument. The book used is divided up into 16 lessons, so we will look at 2 lessons per week. Some concepts include reading rhythms, the music alphabet, playing on the staff, composing music, and more! As this is a group class, we will have a lesson, individual lesson time, and a game time as well.

Each week, our time together will be divided into sections:
-10 Minute Whole-Group Lesson, where you will learn the new lesson of the week
-30 Minute Check-ins (after the 1st week, the teacher will divide students into break-out rooms and check in on students)
-10 Minute Whole-Group Activity related to the day's lesson.

Our 8 weeks together will look like this: (with lessons from the book)
Week 1 (Lessons 1 and 2): Reading Rhythms, Playing Notes C-D-E, F-G-A-B, Flats/Sharps/Naturals and Staff Notation
Week 2 (Lessons 3 and 4): Grand Staff Reading, Middle C and Treble E, F on the Treble Clef Staff, 3/4 Time Signature
Week 3 (Lessons 5 and 6): Treble G and Bass B on the staff, 2/4 Time Signatures
Week 4 (Lesson 7 and 8): Bass A on the staff, articulations
Week 5 (Lesson 9 and 10): Bass G on the staff, Ensemble Playing
Week 6 (Lessons 11 and 12): Bass F on the staff, Dynamics
Week 7 (Lessons 13 and 14): Ensemble Playing, Rests
Week 8 (Lessons 15 and 16): Dotted Quarter Note, Ensemble Playing, Last-Class Concert

The first week of class, we will learn the music as a whole group to make sure all students know how each week will run. The last week of the class, we will hold a mini-concert, playing select songs we have worked on over the summer.

Students will be provided links to download book and material. The Link for the book is found in the
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basics of reading music, and playing piano. This will be a mix of traditional piano music, and modern pop piano music. By the end of the course, students will have an understanding of reading and playing they can continue with in their own lessons, or on their own.

Parental Guidance
Please note that the book we use for the class was written in the 1980's and uses depictions and titles of Native American culture. Some of these songs we may skip, or simply change the title as the song is still relevant to the lesson, just not it's title. This is addressed in the class so learners know what is going on.
Supply List
In addition to the links in the class description, students should also have the following for this class:
-3-Ring Binder or Poly Folder with brads to keep music organized.
-Notebook paper to write notes in from the lesson, and to write assignments down.
-Pencil and pen for marking changes in the music.
-Highlighters for the music.
