Class Experience

Students will learn the basics of reading music, and playing piano. This will be a mix of traditional piano music, and modern pop piano music. By the end of the course, students will have an understanding of reading and playing they can continue with in their own lessons, or on their own.
Zach Seckman has been teaching privately since 2011 for Piano, Voice, Percussion, Drums, Ukulele, and Guitar. Since 2019, he has been giving online distance lessons through OutSchool from his Music School in Kansas. Aside from teaching, Seckman has created and published method books and sheet music for drums, Piano, and Music Theory.
Students will be given assignments to work on between each week. While practicing is not REQUIRED, it is very helpful in making sure students progress and keep up with the class. These assignments will be tailored to what each student needs to work on. The student is responsible for writing down their own homework as the teacher assigns it.
In addition to the links in the class description, students should also have the following for this class: -3-Ring Binder or Poly Folder with brads to keep music organized. -Notebook paper to write notes in from the lesson, and to write assignments down. -Pencil and pen for marking changes in the music. -Highlighters for the music. Here are links for the book we will use in the class: The entire book in PDF form (viewable online or printed): Book separated into lessons: Book purchased and printed from Amazon: **Note about printing the book: The book is separated out into each lesson, and it would be beneficial to have the whole book printed before the class starts. To save paper, you may pull it up on a tablet, or have it printed double-sided.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Please note that the book we use for the class was written in the 1980's and uses depictions and titles of Native American culture. Some of these songs we may skip, or simply change the title as the song is still relevant to the lesson, just not it's title. This is addressed in the class so learners know what is going on.
