Black History: Beyond Malcolm, Rosa, and Martin

The Black/African-American community is rich in history, culture, leadership, and success. In this on-going class, I will introduce learners to moments and people they may not yet know, but certainly won't forget!

I have spent my life in the skin I'm in. I am a black woman, born in 1978 raised just outside of Washington, DC by a single father, a black man from Georgia born in 1956. Lived experience, is experience in my book.

*I set clear expectations to begin my classes on sensitive topics. No one is perfect, there is the potential for hurt feelings or misunderstandings. I am skilled in creating and holding a space for everyone to be themselves, share themselves authentically and learn and grow together.

*Please know that in addition to being a teacher, I am a mother of three boys. I will always treat your learner the way I would want my children to be treated. I will respect everyone's unique points of view, authentically answer questions and always maintain a positive learning environment.

*Finally, the lines of communication are always open with me. If you or your learner have any apprehensions prior to class feel free to send me an email. I always send a note to my learners after classes and should anything stand out as something you may want to follow up on, I will include that in my note. The recordings of class are also available to you. I would caution against watching the recording and talking to your learner about things they shared or asked if they were unaware that was a possibility prior to class. Some students, when feeling safe within the conversation, may get really vulnerable. With sensitive topics I believe transparency is important. It may or may not be important for your learner to know you will see/listen to what they asked or shared during class.
So, as if inviting me into your learner's world for any class isn't requesting trust, I know that offering classes on sensitive topics ramps up the level of trust required. I am here for your learner, I am here for the collective, I will guard their hearts and expand their minds.
