Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Although he is often overlooked by historians, James McCune Smith was a trailblazer in the medical field for African Americans. He was the first African American to earn a medical degree, to work as a physician and to own a pharmacy. Dr. Smith was able to prove to America that black people were capable of being successful doctors. In this lesson, students will learn about the Life of Dr. Smith. They will learn about his early life as an abolitionist and his life as the first black physician in America. We will have a discussion about how he broke racial barriers and created a path for people of color to work in the medical field. Students will learn about some of the challenges Mr. Smith faced and how he we able to overcome them. By the end of class, students will understand how James McCune Smith contributed to the medical world and how he blazed a trail for African Americans.

This class will be very informative, and it also connects to my other African American classes. This lesson will be interactive, and each student will have an opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions. If you have any questions about the class or suggestions, please send a message. This class could possibly go over 30 minutes, as I love to give all students the time speak if they chose to do so.

If you'd like to request a specific time, please send a message

As an ESL Teacher and Tutor, I have taught classes on African American history, American Figures, Racism, and the civil rights movement for over 4 years. I have experience in teaching this subject to students in elementary, middle, and high school. I also have experience tutoring college students. I have a degree in Communications, so I will be able to communicate and teach this topic without being bias. I was able to research, write essays, and give speeches about this topic throughout college. I was trained by professionals to understand history and the issues surrounding history. Most importantly, I will allow each student to express their thoughts and opinions about this topic. This will help them communicate and show what they have learned. It is very important to include all students. I have taught African American history for 2 years. I studied communications in colleges which heavily focused on Afro and African American studies.
