Canine/Feline Body Language Signals
Students will learn some canine/feline body language signals and why it is important to understand them. Students will be provided with videos on canine and feline communication to better understand concepts from class discussion.  Week 3
Lesson 3
Physical Exams and Vital Signs
We will discuss the importance of a pet’s annual physical exam, and students will learn the basics of how a doctor conducts the exam. Normal vital signs will be reviewed. Fear Free Canine and feline restraint techniques will be discussed and “kitty burritos” will be practiced. BRING A SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED STUFFED ANIMAL AND A TOWEL. Videos will be shared on the physical exam and taking vital signs. Learners will be asked to share a photo or a video of their “kitty burrito” in the classroom.

Surgery prep, surgery/OR conduct, and surgical recovery will be discussed. A variety of surgical equipment and surgical instruments will be learned. There will be carefully selected YouTube videos added to this lesson that have surgery in them, as well as a couple that do not. They will be labeled. If your learner does not want to watch these videos, that is COMPLETELY FINE!
 Week 5

Radiology and Dentistry
How we take X-rays and X-ray safety will be discussed. A variety of radiograph photos will be shown in the recording and students will be able to “read the X-Rays”! Questions will allow students to be the “Radiologists” as they decide what they see on the XRays. I will also share my favorite story of something that I saw in practice in this recording! The importance of dental care and how a common veterinary dental exam/cleaning will be shown.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Veterinary Laboratories
Veterinary laboratories are very important in keeping our pets healthy and to diagnose any problems. Common lab tests will be discussed in the recording and some slides will be shown to give students a chance to see what a veterinary lab technician may view under a microscope
I have been a certified veterinary technician for more than 30 years, have a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. I have been teaching at a local community college in a veterinary Assistant Program, a local private university in Equine Studies, and a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school in person.
I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, a Paint horse, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 5 chickens, and 4 cats!
I am passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and veterinary medicine with others! I am excited to help your learner reach their goals!
A handout will be provided for week 3 (physical exam checklist) and students will need a stuffed animal and a towel for week 2 to practice the “kitty burrito” restraint technique.
