Class Experience

Intermediate - Advanced Level
Please note, this is a self-paced class which means there are no live classes. Learners will receive a recorded lesson created by the teacher using a PowerPoint presentation as we explore the veterinary care needed and many medical conditions that we see in these species. Additional carefully selected YouTube videos will be provided after class for students who would like additional learning. 

Weeks 1-6 are Large Animal/Livestock/Horse related content. 

Weeks 7-10 will focus on common exotic pets.

Learners will begin to develop their knowledge on the basic veterinary care of large animals including cattle, horses, sheet, goats, llama, alpaca and pigs.

Cattle
 Dairy and Beef Cattle- how vets do exams/herd health, get vital signs, signs of illness, diagnostic tests when animal is sick.

Horses
 Horses - how veterinarians do physical exams, get vital signs, vaccines, signs of illness diagnostic tests when animal is sick.

Lesson 3:
Sheep and Goats
 Sheep/Goats- how vets do physical exams, get vital signs, signs of illness, diagnostic tests when animal is ill.

Lesson 4:
Pigs/Llamas/Alpaca
 Pigs/Llamas/Alpaca- how vets do physical exams get vital signs, signs of illness, diagnostic tests when animal is ill.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
During this course topics will include injuries and illnesses that may occur with these animals. Learners will also see photos of animals that are being cared for by a veterinary team including surgeries. Please be sure that your learner will not be upset by these topics. Content will be similar to veterinary TV shows. Ths class does not qualify learners to provide any medical or diagnostic services to animals nor is it recommended by the teacher Additional carefully chosen YouTube video links will be provided after class for further exploration on the week’s topic. These are not required, only added for those who would like to participate.

I have been a certified veterinarytechnician for more than 30 years in a mixed animal practice that also sees exotics and injured wildlife. I have a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.   

I have been teaching  at local colleges in veterinary Assistant Programs, an equine studies program and a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. 

 Along with all that I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, a Paint horse, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 6 chickens and 4 cats! 

 I am passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and veterinary medicine with others!
