Welcome to Advanced Veterinary Science 1! In this self-paced, version of one our most popular advanced veterinary science courses. Students will receive recorded lessons and supplemental videos to explore a variety of topics that are related to small animal veterinary medicine. (Cats, dogs, etc). Week 1Lesson 1Terminology 1Students will learn some commonly used prefix/suffix/roots, along with common veterinary terminology. Worksheets will be provided.Week 2Lesson 2Terminology IIStudents will continue to learn some commonly used prefix/suffix/roots, along with common veterinary directional terminology. Terminology Bingo Game will be provided.Week 3Lesson 3Safety and RestraintStudents will learn how veterinary professionals keep themselves and their patients safe including Fear Free handling, , and “kitty burritos” will be practiced using a stuffed animal and a towel.Week 4Lesson 4Possible Emergency Situations/ Pet First Aid KitsStudents will learn about some emergency situations that pets sometimes find themselves in. Lesson topics will include the importance personal safety if there is a pet emergency. Pet first aid home kit’s content will be discussed and a list of items commonly put in a general pet first aid kit will be given.Week 5Lesson 5ToxicitiesThis recorded lesson will discuss some common items that are toxic to dogs/cats. Animal Poison Control number will be given and the teacher will discuss when we might need to use it.Week 6Lesson 6Canine and Feline Anatomy: Anatomy & PhysiologyOver the next 4 lessons learners will explore the anatomy and physiology of cats and dogs. Major body systems will be discussed starting with the animal cell, tissues, and the skeletal system. Additional carefully selected YouTube video links will be provided. Some of these will reference the human body, as many of the body systems of humans are very similar to cats/dogs. (reproductive systems will not be discussed)Week 7Lesson 7Canine and Feline Anatomy: Circulatory & Respiratory Systems, BloodIn this lesson learners will continue to explore the anatomy and physiology of cats and dogs. This lesson will include the circulatory system, blood and the respiratory system.Week 8Lesson 8Canine and Feline Anatomy: Digestive System, Nervous System and MusclesIn this lesson learners will continue to explore the anatomy and physiology of cats and dogs. This lesson will include the digestive system, muscles and the nervous system.Week 9Lesson 9Canine and Feline Anatomy: Urinary System, Eyes and EarsIn this lesson we will wrap up our lessons on the anatomy and physiology of cats and dogs. Urinary System, Eyes and Ears will finish up our anatomy weeks!Week 10Lesson 10Comprehensive Physical Exams I : Patient History & Body Condition ScoresIn this lesson the teacher will review the importance of a complete physical exam and how we get a patient history, and body condition scoring will be taught.Week 11Lesson 11Comprehensive Physical Exams II : Physical Exam, Vital Signs and a Case StudyIn this recorded lesson the teacher will review vital signs, and how a vet completes a physical exam A case study will be reviewed and learners will be given information on 3 more to review prior to watching the final lesson recording.Week 12Lesson 12Case Study ReviewReview of the final 3 case studies will be done.
- Learners will begin their journey in the study of veterinary science by starting to develop their knowledge in terminology, anatomy and other topics that are the basis of veterinary careers.
I have been a certified veterinary technician for more than 30 years, have a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. I have been teaching at multiple local community colleges in veterinary Assistant Programs, and in an equine studies program, as well as a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, a Paint horse, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 9 chickens and 4 cats! I am passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and veterinary medicine with all learners from diverse backgrounds from all around the world! If your learner has a dream to be a veterinary professional, then I am excited to help them on this first step!
