'Beyond the pale' is an old English adage to denote something that is unacceptable and beyond the norms of acceptable behavior. Racism and racist actions would be beyond the pale in society. We cannot pretend that it does not exist, nor can we normalize it by stating that we do not see color. But what do mean when we say that someone is racist? And what are the neural and psychological correlates of a racist brain/mind? In this class we will explore the brain pathways that form the basis of thoughts and behavior that are considered racist. This class is the first in the 'Beyond the Pale' series which will examine racism and other human inequalities. The class with be instructional but will have enough time for guided discussion and open dialogue, verbally or via chat. The views of the students are important, and all that is expressed with be within a safe environment of acceptance and learning. The class will incorporate power-point slides, video clips when applicable and links to resources for extended learning.

Teacher expertise and credentials
In addition to my training and work as a neuroscientist (MS & PhD), I have a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and a graduate certificate in Community Psychology. I have worked with United Way and Upward Bound programs in New York City with disenfranchised populations (inner city areas). I have extensive experience with working in communities within a psychosocial framework, where issues related to racism surfaced often. Being a person of color who has experienced racism firsthand, I have both the expertise and first hand experience of racism within individuals and communities.
