Final Activity/Project: Students will write a paragraph focusing on the theme of kindness and friendship while making connections. Students will also create a Wishtree of their own.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 7
“Red is an oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood "wishtree"―people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red's branches. Along with a crow named Bongo and other animals who seek refuge in Red's hollows, this wishtree watches over the neighborhood. You might say Red has seen it all. Until a new family moves in.” ~Katherine Applegate Throughout this class, learners will read the assigned chapters and respond to discussion questions. As students read the assigned chapters, (which will be posted in writing, in the classroom), I will provide my thoughts and comments to get students thinking, visualizing, and making connections as they read. I will post questions, in writing, for students to answer related to the readings. Students can respond to the questions in writing or video using the "Record Video" function in the classroom. I will respond to student responses in writing. Students are also expected to comment on at least one other classmate’s responses and expand upon those ideas.
Learning Goals
As students read, they will strengthen comprehension using various strategies, such as visualization, making predictions, making connections, character development, vocabulary.
Story themes include, kindness, friendship, and diversity.
