In this 12-week self-paced course, students will accelerate their reading knowledge with practice with long vowels, diphthongs, and a variety of reading strategies that accelerate reading, writing, and spelling skills.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Long O Sound (oa, o_e, oe, ow, o)
Learners will be introduced to a variety of spellings for the long o sound (spellings are prioritized by frequency). Learners will begin to build, sort, and read words with various long o spellings.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Long E Sound (ee, ea, y, e_e, e)
Learners will be introduced to a variety of spellings for the long a sound (spellings are prioritized by frequency). Learners will begin to build, sort, and read words with various long a spellings.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Long A Sound (ai, ay, ey, a, a_e)
Learners will be introduced to a variety of spellings for the long a sound (spellings are prioritized by frequency). Learners will begin to build, sort, and read words with various long a spellings.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Long I sound (i_e, i, y, igh, ie)
Learners will be introduced to a variety of spellings for the long i sound (spellings are prioritized by frequency). Learners will begin to build, sort, and read words with various long i spellings.

Lesson 5
Mixed long vowel practice and tackling multi-syllable words
In this lesson, learners will practice a "flex it" strategy (set for variability) to help increase reading fluency and flexibility.

R-controlled sounds
Learners will learn about vowel sounds influenced by an r (ar, or, er, ir, ur).
 Week 7
Lesson 7
/ow/ sound (ow, ou)
Learners will practice the /ow/ sound spelled ow and ou, and other sounds of these spelling combinations.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
/oo/ (ue, ui, u_e, u, oo, ou, ew)
Learners will be introduced to a variety of spellings for the long u sound (spellings are prioritized by frequency). Learners will begin to build, sort, and read words with various long u spellings.
 Week 9
Lesson 9
/aw/ (au, aw, ough, al, augh)
Learners will be introduced to a variety of spellings for the /aw/sound (spellings are prioritized by frequency). Learners will begin to build, sort, and read words with various /aw/ spellings.
 Week 10
Lesson 10
/oy/ (oi, oy)
Learners will practice the /ow/ sound spelled ow and ou, and examine some basic spelling considerations that come with the sounds.
 Week 11
Lesson 11
Hard and soft "c" and "g"
Learners will practice being flexible with consonant sounds (c and g), learn which letters will change the sounds of c and g, and practice reading words with those sounds.
 Week 12
Lesson 12
Double and Single Consonants
Learners will learn some cues that may help them more quickly determine when words will have a long or short vowel sound.
  • Learners will improve their reading accuracy and speed while learning advanced phonics sounds (long vowels, diphthongs, etc) using an approach based on "set for variability" (the idea that letters and letter-combinations in English can correspond with more than one sound.
I am a certified elementary teacher with years of experience in schools. I have also taught ESL for 3 years on-line, and hold an MA in Teaching from Dominican University. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach through IMSE (30-hour) and the Reed Charitable Foundation Classroom Educator (30-hour course).

Details: Learners use their weekly reading passages to track improvements in accuracy and fluency.
This class uses strategies aligned with the Science of Reading, which support all learners (including dyslexic learners) in attaining the skills necessary to read.
No additional materials are required for our course. Printable passages will be sent, but you are welcome to read them on your device instead of printing.
