Class Experience

Congratulations! Over the past months, you have learned to read in Arabic and you have built a foundation in basic Arabic grammar and vocabulary. It is time to use everything you have learned to actively communicate with each other.

Each week of this class, we focus on a specific topic as a prompt to ask and answer questions. There will be two lessons each week - most of the content is introduced in the first lesson, while the second lesson mainly focuses on practicing speaking using what we learned in the first class. The main goal is to get the learner used to the different ways of asking and answering questions, while providing ample opportunity to practice and retain vocabulary. Another main objective of the class is to teach the learner the variety of ways Modern Standard Arabic adopts words and expressions from the most prominent Arabic "dialects," such as Egyptian and Levantine Arabic.

Please note that Intermediate Arabic 2 or 3, or previous experience studying Arabic, is necessary before taking this class. Feel free to reach out if you have questions about placement.

These are the weekly conversation topics:
Week of Feb 7: 1) Expanded greetings and introductions
Week of Feb 14: 2) Talking about activities and events in the past (Part 1)
Week of March 7: 3) Family and friends
Week of March 14: 4) Animals and pets
Week of March 21: 5) Future plans, wishes, and dreams
Week of March 28: 6) Talking about activities and events in the past (Part 2)
Week of April 4: 7) Middle Arabic (mixing expressions often used in Arabic dialects)
Week of April 25: 8) Descriptions, opinions & preferences

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in English from San Francisco State University, MA in Linguistics
My entire career has focused on teaching languages and encouraging cross-cultural interaction and learning. After obtaining my undergraduate degree in English, I joined an acclaimed cultural center in Morocco, where I was trained to teach Arabic and facilitate multicultural dialogue. I taught Modern Standard Arabic and Darija (Moroccan Arabic) to students from all over the world.

After moving to California, I continued working as a teacher of languages. I taught Arabic, French, and English as a foreign language for various institutions, including Berlitz, ABC Languages, and Fresno State University. In 2013, I received my Masters in English (with a focus on linguistics) from San Francisco State University. I have been teaching Arabic on Outschool for more than 5 years.

When learning a new language, it's best to use that language as much as possible. While speaking some English may be necessary at first, it should be minimized as learning progresses. As much as possible, I choose to engage my students in Arabic and elicit responses in Arabic as well.

The most efficient way to learn a language is to focus on conversation. In my classes, I always prioritize speaking to help the learner overcome any initial feeling of intimidation. Everybody has a different learning style. As a teacher, I adapt my teaching style to the needs and learning styles of each individual student.

When I'm not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two young sons. I'm excited to raise my children in a multilingual and multicultural environment. With that goal in mind, our family spent 2019 traveling and homeschooling - we visited Germany, Austria, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, and Albania. It was fascinating!

Over the last four years, I've had the pleasure of teaching students of many backgrounds from over two dozen countries. I teach all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced student of Modern Standard Arabic. Feel free to contact me - I'm excited to help you find the perfect course for your learner!
