Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Short vowel sounds and short vowel words are addressed in this class. Students should have already learned or been introduced to short vowel sounds and are beginning to read. This class is for children with prior instruction in phonics and reading that need additional help and encouragement.

Students will practice reading short vowel words, mostly CVC (Consonant Vowel Consonant), and are reminded of the rules and vowel sounds for short vowel words.
In class, a very brief introduction is followed by practicing short vowel sounds. Next students will participate in a variety of activities that require reading and writing short vowel words. Activities may include making rhyming cvc words, making silly words using the same vowel sounds in each, creating word families and more.
I instruct by encouraging the children to give as much information as they can, then filling in missing information. For instance, Billy what sound does the letter "A" make? or "I can think of a word ending in 'ed' it is a color. What is it?". Can you think of more words that sounds like red?
My teaching style is very interactive with lots of scaffolding on children's individual skills and knowledge. Each class offered will be different so learners can enroll multiple times for more practice and instruction with reading short vowel words.
Learning Goals
1. To practice reading short vowel words.
2. To enjoy a game like learning session to enhance phonics skills.

I have been teaching young children for many years. Additionally, I have been teaching English as a second language to children ages three through 15, for the last four years. My students are progressing very well with their English language speaking and reading. The methods used for teaching both are similar. I hold a degree in Elementary Education, did graduate work in Early Childhood Special Education and taught Early childhood classes for teachers at the college level. I love teaching.
