Assessment
There are several factors on why there will not be a formal assessment in this class which are that students in the class will be various ages and will have different experiences with music.

Class Experience

In this class students will be introduced to the pennywhistle. They will learn where it came from, how to play it and learn simple yet elegant Irish Traditional tunes. The number of tunes learned will depend on the ability and pace of the students in the class.
We will start out with learning about the instrument; its history, its range and its limitations. Please note-- the ability to read music is not required in this class.
Students will begin playing their pennywhistle in the first lesson and will be able to play at least one simple tune after that first lesson.
Next the students will be introduced to "Irish Trad" and or Celtic music and how it is organized.
Students will be taught to play the tunes by ear which is the Suzuki Method, but I will offer sheet music if any students want it for their personal use. The preference is for them to learn by ear as it ultimately will benefit their playing.
Each class will be composed of :
Warm-up scales and tunes
Review of the previous week's music and working through questions or problems that any student experienced in the previous week's music assignment
Introduction to new music
Students will play individually if they are comfortable with that and then play together.
The class will progress at the pace of the class as a whole.
Students learn music at different paces so if there are advanced students, they will be given additional music so that there is no pressure on those students who learn at a slower place and need more time.
Students are not required to play in front of other students if they are uncomfortable and can keep their camera off unless the instructor needs to see their fingering on the pennywhistle in order to help them.
By the end of the six weeks, each student will have a good beginning on the pennywhistle, will be able to play several tunes, and should be able to move on to the next level course.

I learned to play the clarinet and read music in the sixth grade and continued through middle and high school, playing in the band. I also learned to play the piano. I started playing the recorder around 2007 and played medieval music with a group for several years. I then began playing the Irish pennywhistle in 2010 with a small group playing Irish and European tunes for contra dances and musical events. I also play the bodhran (Irish drum) and am learning to play the mountain dulcimer. Music is in my blood. I absolutely love playing music and hope to share my enthusiasm with my students.
