Beginning Music Theory

This 10-session course will build a solid foundation for learners who are new to music theory. This class is perfect for those who are learning or would like to learn an instrument, who love to sing, or are interested in composition!

What's included

Homework
1-2 hours per week. Homework will be assigned each week to reinforce what was taught in class. If students have any questions about the assignment please email me. We will go over all assignments in class.
Grading
I do grade the homework assignments. Final grades are offered, upon request. Letter grades are calculated based on a percentage taken from homework assessments and final project. A certificate of completion will be available, upon request.

Class Experience

This class is a great way for your student to begin their journey into music. We will approach music in an engaging and practical way that is great for beginners to learn music theory and build musicianship skills. The class is interactive and the learners are encouraged to actively participate throughout the class. This class is perfect for those who are learning an instrument, would like to learn an instrument, or who love to sing! Since this is a beginning level class, no prior knowledge of music is required, although having a basis of music can be helpful - all are welcome! It is equivalent to one semester of music theory. The last 5 minutes of class is allotted for students to share what they've been working on in lessons, the opportunity to perform something, or to ask questions. 

Curriculum:
Class 1: The music staff, note values, identifying and reading notes on the treble clef
Class 2: Bass clef, rhythm, rest values, double bar lines, repeat signs
Class 3: Time signatures, accidentals
Class 4: Half steps, whole steps, scale degrees, constructing a major scale, intervals, solfege
Class 5: Advanced rhythms and time signatures (dotted rhythms, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, 2/2, 3/2 and 6/8 time signatures)
Class 6: Tempo markings, melody, musical phrasing, dynamics
Class 7: Intro to key signatures
Class 8: Key signatures part II
Class 9: Review of all material, discuss final presentation
Class 10: Presentation on a composer of student's choice
