Join me to explore the exciting lives of caterpillars and butterflies! We will learn all about different kinds of caterpillars and butterflies. We will also learn how they grow, how they eat and even how they defend themselves.
Class experience
US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
5 minutes- This will be spent building background knowledge and discussing what learners already know about all types of butterflies. 20-25 minutes- I will read parts of the stories "Caterpillar to Butterfly" and "Caterpillar to Butterfly". I will share facts from the books and share pictures that I have taken of butterflies as well. I will stop frequently to discuss what we've read, point out details from pictures, explain why and how pictures are labeled certain ways, discuss key...
Students will learn about caterpillar's, butterflies and their life cycle. We will discuss the vocabulary words: caterpillar, chrysalis, antennae, camouflage, stages, predator and nectar throughout the lesson.
I am offering this class because I love butterflies and nature! Every year, for the past 16 years, I have purchased caterpillars for my classroom and have helped my students care for and observe the process of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. I have learned a lot over the years :)!
Homework Offered
Homework is optional. Some homework ideas are: 1. Students may draw and label the life cycle of a butterfly. 2. Students may draw and label the parts of a butterfly. 3. Students may observe butterflies in the wild and write about what they see.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I will assess students orally at the end of the lesson. I will ask them what they learned about caterpillars, butterflies and the life cycle of a butterfly. I will also ask them what their favorite thing was that they learned about butterflies.Grades Offered
Attached handout (or a plain piece of paper), markers, crayons and/or pencils. In addition- If would like to purchase the books that I will be reading they are as follows. I will be reading the book "Caterpillar to Butterfly" by Laura Marsh and the book "Caterpillars and Butterflies" by Stephanie Turnbull. These books are available for purchase on Amazon. "Caterpillar to Butterfly" is $3.99. "Caterpillars and Butterflies" is $8.97.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
