In this course, essential Japanese concepts will be mastered, including: - the hiragana alphabet, the most essential writing system of Japanese - grammatical construction of basic Japanese sentence structures - vocabulary ranging from greetings and introductions, to conversational subjects such as family, interests, hobbies, and elements of Japanese culture - accurate pronunciation training - a healthy dose of Japanese cultural knowledge Most classes will feature reviews of previous knowledge through games, conversational demonstrations, or seminar formats. At the beginning of the course, students will be assigned a cultural topic that they will be required to present during the final session... all in Japanese! They will add more and more to the presentation as they learn more and more ways to describe and explain their topic, while developing an appreciation for Japanese culture and language. As an instructor, I will always be present to offer enthusiasm for successes, motivation for challenges, and encourage other students to support each other through positive communication. Students in this class are not expected to have any previous knowledge of Japanese. CURRICULUM Session 1 • Introduction to hiragana, katakana and kanji • Greetings in Japanese • Final presentations assigned Session 2 • Describing your family • Learning about verbs Session 3 • Conjugating verbs to past and present • Explanation of particles • Offering suggestions • Breaking down order of Japanese sentences Session 4 • Numbers in Japanese • Expressing your age & counter words • Expressing time specifically Session 5 • Reviewing hiragana and kanji • Learn about adjectives • The volitional form • Counting objects Session 6 • Reviewing hiragana and kanji • Creating complex phrases • Requesting actions • Ordering actions • Stating what needs to happen • Describing causality Session 7 • Reviewing hiragana and kanji • Exploring more complex phrases • Going to do something • Counting people Session 8 * Final presentations • Final assessment results • Close-out celebration
Learning Goals
• Students will expand their vocabulary of Japanese, knowledge of hiragana, and develop confidence in talking about themselves in a simple conversational format.

Students should have access to pens, pencils, a notebook, and graph paper. No textbook is required for this course.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have studied the Japanese language since middle school in classroom settings, individual mentorships, independent study and study abroad programs. I received a degree in Japanese from Kalamazoo College and a certification of proficiency from the Japan Center for Michigan Universities. I have offered remote instruction and tutoring to students of Japanese for the past several months.
