Class Experience

This class is a follow up to Part I of Beginning Flute Using the Young Flute Player. This book emphasizes the low register of the flute, thus making it easier for beginners to start the flute at an early age. The music includes familiar folk songs and pieces plus scales and arpeggios (usually in five note scales). Part II will expand the student's knowledge of the F and G major scales. Students will learn new time signatures such as 6/8 and new rhythms like sixteenth notes.
Week 1 - Unit 14 - F scale, arpeggio and pieces
Week 2 - Unit 15 - Slurs and ties - F Major
Week 3 - Unit 16 - Arpeggios, Round
Week 4 - Unit 17 - Staccato; Rigaudon; The British Grenadiers
Week 5 - Unit 18 - March from Scipio; review
Week 6 - Unit 19 - G scale; scales with slurs; pieces in G
Week 7 - Unit 20 - Extra exercises
Week 9 - Unit 22 - 6/8 time
Week 10 - Unit 23 - sixteenth notes
Week 11 - Extra solos and studies
Week 12 - Book review and wrap-up
Students will work with me to learn the material that is covered in class My typical class includes students reviewing older material and then listening to me play the new pieces and having the students play them as well. I use music games from time to time to encourage students in learning the new concepts. Students should plan on practicing between 10 to 15 minutes five days a week. My teaching style aims to encourage students with positive comments and praise. I believe that beginning an instrument is a new and hard experience and I want students to know they can do this with work, practice and time. Students should have completed The Young Flute Player, Part I or have played flute for approximately three to six months.
Learning Goals
Students will learn F Major scales and arpeggios, 6/8 time, sixteenth notes and studies and solos that work on these materials.
