Beginner Level
Enjoy the band experience online. Playing music is such a rewarding pursuit and this class will be a first step toward musicianship. Each student will choose an instrument commonly seen in the band- flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone or tuba. Each week we will learn different musical concepts and practice them on our instruments. We will learn basic technique for each instrument and how to read music in their respective clefs. By the end of this class, students should be able to play a few songs, including folk songs and classical melodies. Week 1- We will learn how to put our instruments together, how to make our first sounds, how to read a fingering chart and learn the first five notes. Week 2- We will review the first five notes and introduce quarter notes and rests Week 3- we will introduce half notes and play them in conjunction with quarter notes. Week 5-we will add whole notes to our possible rhythms and we will also learn note 6 Week 6- we will add note 7 and introduce pick-up notes. We will also begin using dynamics. Week 7- we will introduce eighth notes Week 8 we will explain 2/4 time and explore the new time signature.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the first steps of playing a musical instrument, including tone production and fingerings.
Students will also learn basic music theory in the form of note reading and rhythms.

The instrument of their choice and Essential Elements Book 1 for their instrument.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Every student will need their chosen instrument and Essential Elements book 1 for their instrument. Some instruments will also require reeds. (Oboe, clarinet, saxophone and bassoon)
