Class Experience

Join me for a beginning ballet class for young learners who have wanted to try ballet!

No prior ballet knowledge is needed and learners may join at any time. Learners will be accommodated easily into the structure of the class as we repeat the same ballet positions every week.

The exact class focus and content will be learner-based and change each week to address and support learners' needs.

During our once-a-week class, we will learn basic ballet vocabulary, and foundational positions, and arrange them into choreographed phrases of movement.

We will start with the barre - or something you can use to find and assist your balance - a chair works well! Here we will learn the basic positions of the feet and a traditional ballet warm-up that incorporates classical ballet technique and terminology along with body alignment and posture.

After barre, we will stretch and move into the second part of class. This is where we work through adagio, using slow movements to gain strength and control, traveling movements across the floor to include turns, and allegro, which includes both small and large jumps that build technique and stamina.

As time progresses we will be able to combine our knowledge of basic steps and build upon them to learn more challenging combinations and pieces of choreography.

I believe that dance is for everyone, and the benefits of ballet are numerous. All of my classes are neuro-affirming and I encourage all learners to participate at their unique ability. I love watching dancers blossom as they find their joy in the art. I encourage questions and will break steps down so that self-confidence and knowledge of how their body is working are growing alongside ballet technique.
Learning Goals

Parental Guidance
Please ensure that your dancer has an open space clear of obstacles or furniture so that your learner can complete movements freely and safely. An area of at least 4 ft x 4 ft is recommended. Your dancer should wear comfortable dancewear to allow for movement and alignment correction. Leotards are recommended, but comfortable activewear is permitted with the exception of crop tops and sports bras. Ballet slippers are also recommended for the best experience, however, non-slip socks are permitted. Hair should be pulled back off the learner’s face, preferably into a ballet bun. Your dancer should have a water bottle available nearby during the lesson, and any injuries should be mentioned before the start of class so that modifications can be made to any class exercises. Ballet is a physical activity, and there is always a level of risk and injury that can occur with any physical activity. You should monitor your learners' well-being while enrolled in dance class and you agree to assume any responsibility for any physical injuries that may occur in class. Because ballet is a physical activity it is important for all learners to have their cameras on for the entire class period. This is for the safety of the learner so that we can ensure that proper technique and alignment are being practiced. Students will not be admitted into class if they are more than 10 minutes late due to safety concerns.
Supply List
To get the most out of class learners should have the following available:
A chair or something solid to hold onto for barre
A hard surface to dance on - preferably not carpet, however, if you have no choice low pile carpet is best.
A location where the learner can be seen from head to toe on camera to help with technique correction.
Ballet slippers are recommended, however, you may also use non-slip socks.
Proper dancewear will allow for better movement and will enable the teacher to see the student's alignment. A ballet leotard or comfortable activewear is recommended with the exception of crop tops and sports bras.
Hair pulled off the face.
A water bottle

My name is Ms. Jena and I am a 2nd generation homeschooling mom to 4 children. I hold a Bachelor’s in Education Studies from Ashford University and have been teaching in the dance and homeschool communities for over 28 years.

I have an extensive background in classical dance pedagogy, both as a dancer in the professional world of ballet and as an educator teaching children and adults. I was trained in a blend of Checceti and Vagonova techniques from artists such as Nathalie LeVine, Francesca Corkle, Arnott Mader, and Malcolm Burn. I danced professionally with Richmond Ballet, Boston Dance Company, Northern Ballet Theatre, and Jennie & Company. I have completed teaching training programs with Nathalie LeVine, Deborah Vogel, Broadway Dance Center, and Finis Jhung. After teaching for many of the company schools I danced with I was the Artistic Director and Owner of a pre-professional training facility for over a decade teaching and choreographing multiple productions a year.

I love the world of dance and look forward to welcoming your learner into it. Sharing this artistic world and watching dancers - both young and old - find a passion similar to mine is something that brings me joy. I can not wait for your learner to join me!
