US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner Level
This class is intended for Students: - Struggling with Pre-Algebra basic concepts - Beginning a Pre-Algebra class and want inside help, techniques, or tips. - Curious how elementary math works in Pre-Algebra concepts. - Wanting to get a head start in their PreAlgebra/Beginning Algebra math journey. How is the class Structured: This is a Self Paced Course with 5 Lessons. Each lesson will be approximately 30-45 minutes. There will be one or two interrelated concepts taught in each lesson. Each lesson builds upon the previous session's activities, so please do the lessons in order. This class has lecture with information slides and examples, students can work examples presented on the slides. Notes pages with fill in the blank information will be provided for each lesson. Students can then keep and use these notes for their future regular PreAlgebra classes. Additional Practice Problems (and worked answer keys) will also be available. This basic knowledge and working understanding will be helpful for upcoming Pre-Algebra or Beginning Algebra classes that students may be taking in their own future math classes. I will have office hours, so if the student has any questions or needs additional help, they can send me a message and I will respond. Also, any practice problems or work that the student submits for review - will be reviewed and feedback will be given. Please allow at least 24-48 hours for a response as I am not always at my desk, and different times may play a part in the timing of messages sent and received. Prior Knowledge: Students will need to know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide Whole Numbers. This course lays a foundation for working with Variables. This basic knowledge and working understanding will be the foundation for future courses (should the student wish to continue). See Course Syllabus for more information on Lesson Content. Lesson 1: Using the Alphabet --- Introduction to Unknown Variables Lesson 2: The Golden Rule: working with Properties of Equality Lesson 3: The Powerful Process: Learn the 4-step process to solve for a variable in simple equations. Lesson 4: Creating Solutions Tables: If x, then y. Lesson 5: Simplify Expressions by Combining Like Terms.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to
Recognize and use variables in expressions and equations
Use Inverse Operations and Properties of Equality to keep equations balanced
Learn the I,C,B,S process for solving for a variable in simple algebraic equations
Create solutions tables for a basic if x then y statement and equation
Simplify expressions by combining like terms.
