Class Experience

Beginner Level
This 2 week course is meant to teach the basics and general rules of the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition tabletop system in a beginner/child-friendly way without the need to read through mountains of text or dwell on technical jargon. We will cover aspects such as character creation, roleplaying and general gameplay flow of an average session.

You will be learning Character Creation, Basic Rules Explanation
One-Shot Adventure, Roleplay, Character Interaction

I'll be using a website named Roll20 for visual aid since it serves as a platform for online virtual tabletop games. I will do my outmost best to make sure everyone is learning at the same pace and everyone is on the same page, constantly asking questions and keeping the flow of the class steady, but also making sure that the learners are not getting overwhelmed. I encourage learners to ask as many questions as they can and will even ask for them to help me when I need to explain an aspect of the game through an example. Should any learner have a degree of experience with a specific topic, I encourage them to assist me when answering a question regarding it.

After this short course, you are ready to join our weekly classes!

Learning Needs
D&D can be molded to allow people with Dyslexia and ADHD to engage in a way that works for them.
I'm following guidelines done by professionals as well as feedback from previous neurodivergent players to accommodate for everyone.
Parental Guidance
D&D, being a tabletop system based on the idea of guided adventures in a world of spell and sorcery, contains certain levels of potential violence through it's combat system. A warrior doing a sword slash or a wizard shooting a spell often has consequences for the target of such.

This, plus the fact that the game's world is made through the joint efforts of the players and DM, means that all should be in agreement as to what should be and what shouldn't be present in their gaming environment beyond the combat element.

Though this is more applicable for a long-term game, I often use a series of TTRPG Safety Tools to ensure the comfort of my players. A quick rundown of what these entail can be found here: https://startplaying.games/blog/posts/startplaying-safety-tools-explained-how-to
Pre-Requisites
No prior experience with either D&D or the Roll20 online platform is required.
Supply List
Though not specifically required, The following link leads to the Creative Commons Document (also known as the SRD) which is approved to use by Wizards of The Coast and can help as a "read-along" guide to learn the mechanical basics of D&D:

Hi There!
I'm Lori...a graduate of F.I.T in NYC. I've worked in different areas of the design industry since 1991, from illustration, pattern making, garment construction to designing full story boards for buyers. I tutored Fashion Illustration for a few years to help other students complete their professional portfolios before their interviews. Besides getting creative, I LOVE animals! I have quite a few furry little beasts. Right now, my profession is Graphic Design, but fashion illustration and design is still what I do when I need to unwind from technology. I believe that once you learn the basics of how to get that creativity out of your mind and onto paper, you open up a whole new world, being able to share and build on your talents.

*Teacher Rori
They/Them
As an alumni of Cleveland Institute of Art with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Game Design they have a passion for interactive art and how they can push the boundaries of what interactive art means. Having been a visual arts assistant at their old high school Interlochen Arts Academy during the summers, teaching others and seeing the joy in what people create has motivated Rori to pursue teaching. In their free time Rori likes to aquascape. Creating aquariums of any variety of sizes and making little beautiful habitats for their favorite type of fish a Betta fish, they currently have 2 bettas and 4 tanks.

She/Her
Throughout my career in education, I have developed a strong foundation for fostering creativity and critical thinking among students. I have had the privilege of designing and implementing art programs that engage learners and inspire them to explore their unique artistic voices in many afterschool programs since 2019. My extensive experience across various mediums—such as painting, yarn and needlework, jewelry making, and digital arts—has equipped me with the versatility to adapt my teaching methods and cater to diverse learning styles.

*Teacher Jonathan
I have been working in the design/visual arts world for the last 6 years. From designing websites, to doing personal commissions, art is something I’m very passionate about. I had the chance to live in New York for the last 3 years, and had the opportunity to visit world-renowned museums and galleries such as The Met, MoMA, Guggenheim etc. I also curated an Art Gallery with over 200 artworks from local artists in upstate NY. I’m thrilled to bring my experience to these lessons and share that enthusiasm with my students.
