Class Experience

A sewing machine is a popular gift for young students. Getting started can be difficult on ones own. This 6-week class will help students become familiar with the art of sewing by learning about the parts of the sewing machine, proper techniques, practicing stitches, and making beginning projects.
Week 1 – Setting up your workspace and using the right tools. Students will learn the importance of proper sewing procedures including accurate pinning, cutting and pressing between sewing.
Week 2 – Getting to know your sewing machine – Anatomy of your sewing machine, threading, stitches, basic sewing techniques to get you started.
Week 3 – Let’s make a tote bag. Using straight stitches, we will make a lined tote bag. Students will learn how to sew a consistent seam allowance, going around corners, and top stitching.
Week 4 – Let’s make a head band. Students will learn how to use a pattern, sew curves, how to turn out a project and use decorative top stitch.
Week 5 – Let’s make a Skirt. Without using a pattern, students will learn how to measure their bodies, cut fabric, make a casing and hem the bottom.
Week 6 – Skirt continued. Students will put finishing touches on their skirt and review the lessons they have learned.
This class can lead to a lifelong love of sewing and creating with fabric.
