What's included

5 live meetings
2 hrs 30 mins in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Practice makes perfect”! Learners are encouraged to practice at least 50 minutes a week (10 minutes for 5 days) so that they are able to stay on pace with their peers in class. Learners will also complete written Theory pages that will help with comprehension of what we learn in class each week.

Class Experience

This class is perfect for families looking for Beginner Piano Lessons in their own home. Without having to worry about a commute, you can have much more flexibility with your schedule. Learners have shown up for lessons in their PJ's or take lessons while a parent is cooking, catching up with work or giving other siblings one on one time.

This introductory Piano Class is geared toward learners with no previous Piano instruction and is the first in my series of Piano Classes. We will learn to read music and correct techniques for playing. Learners will progress by dedicating a small amount of time outside of class to review each lesson by practicing and finishing assignments to retain what we learn from one class to the next. I suggest students spend at least 10 minutes a day, for 4 days each week of class.

Not sure if your learner is quite ready for Piano Lessons or would you prefer a One-Time Class with me first to see if I would be a good fit for you learner? Check out my Piano 101 class using the link below.

SCHEDULE
In this class, learners will have the opportunity to learn 4 songs, along with additional warm up songs and theory assignments! When teaching students to play piano, it is important to me that they aren't just shown how to play a song, but become proficient in reading music and understanding what it is that they are playing. By the end of this class, learners will have learned their finger numbers for playing the piano, a Quarter Note, Half Note and Whole Note, a creative way to identify the letters of the White Keys, where to place their fingers on the keys, and how to read simple Music Notation including a Bar Line, Measure, Double Bar Line, Repeat Sign, and Time Signature.

Class 1: Meet and Greet | Finger Numbers | Introduction to the Piano | Basic Theory & Playing
Class 2: Quarter Note, Half Note, Whole Note | Song: "Merrily We Roll Along"
Class 3: The Letters of the White Keys | Middle 'C' Position | Song: "Batter Up!"
Class 4: Repeat Sign | Time Signature | Song: "Our Clever Pup"
Class 5: Song: "The Ski Lift"

Younger learners may need the assistance of an adult sitting next to them off camera. Learners should be able to write the numbers 1-5 and the letters A-G with little to no help. This class is is perfect for families trying to determine if piano is something their learner will keep an interest in long term. After completing this class I offer additional Levels to allow learners to continue learning in a small class setting or Private 1 to 1 lessons. You can check out those classes below!

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CLASS

1. It is important to see learners' faces and hands during the class. Have learners sitting at their piano/keyboard and have your device able to capture them from their head to lower ribcage. I will be able to offer learners feedback on the use of their hands/fingers this way during the lesson. (Example Picture is provided in the Outschool Classroom once enrolled) I would highly discourage using a Phone or other small devices for this class. The larger the screen, the better experience your learner will have.

2. Please have all Materials ready and Handouts printed prior to starting class. Learners will need a Piano or Keyboard, Pencil, Ear Phones/Buds, and Weekly Handouts for each class.

3. In some lessons, learners will need to write on their Handouts. Please make sure your space is equipped for this to be possible with a clipboard, desk, or something hard to write on.

4. Younger learners WILL benefit from having an adult sitting next to them (off camera) for help, especially in the first class or two. Learning the piano virtually is possible, but may need adult supervision to get started. You know your child best!

5. Ensure learners are in a quiet space or have earphones/buds to allow them to hear the teacher and stay engaged.

6. SUPER IMPORTANT!! Double Check your Audio Setting on Zoom. You want to make sure that in your Audio Settings you have selected "Original Sound For Musicians". Do NOT have "Suppress Background Noise" checked or I won't be able to hear your Instrument. If you are on a Laptop, which is preferred for Music Classes, make sure that your MICROPHONE is set almost to the top to ensure the sound is picked up well.

Maryland Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Hello Outschool Families! I’m a certified educator in the USA. I've been teaching on Outschool for several years now and have loved establishing relationships with learners and their families. I've been teaching the Piano for 17 years and teaching a variety of other Performing Arts subjects since graduating with my degree in Music Education in 2009.

Music has been a passion of mine since I was a child. I grew up in a musical family, sang in church and school, began piano lessons in first grade, was in several musicals, was in the band where I played the flute and piccolo, and lead music at my church on the worship team. I am passionate about students and education! I've included my credentials and experience below.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education
- State Certified Teacher
- Instruments: Piano, Voice, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone and Percussion

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
- Private Instruction for 17 years
- Public Elementary School Music Teacher for 12 years
- Public Middle School Performing Arts Teacher for 2 years
- Summer Camps (Church and Public Performing Arts)

CLASSES TAUGHT
I've taught a variety of subjects, but my favorite are Performing Arts Classes. I've taken my Choirs to perform at Disney World and have directed Musicals in Elementary Schools and Middle Schools including, Jungle Book Kids and Beauty and the Beast Junior. Below are just selection of classes I have experience teaching.

- Choir/Chorus (in person)
- Beginning Band (in person)
- Voice Lessons (in person/online)
- Piano Lessons (in person/online)
- Musical Theater (in person)
- Orff Ensemble (in person)
- Recorder (in person/online)
- Group Piano Classes (in person/online)
- Audition Preparation (in person/online)
- Music Theory (in person/online)

I believe it’s important to be a life long learner and that’s why Outschool is so awesome. This platform allows learners to hone in on a specific subject, learn more about what they’re interested in, or discover their talent in the fine arts developing students into well rounded individuals! My goal is that every learner and family leaves my class feeling their time was well spent!

I look forward to getting to know you and hope our time together will leave a lasting impact!
