***Word problems are based on 3rd grade standards**** Can you solve a math problem if there are just numbers, but have difficulty once it becomes a word problem? Then this class is for you! Each week, students will work together to solve word problems of varying difficulty. Our focus will be on determining how to solve using the CUBES problem-solving strategy. C-circle all numbers U- underline question B- box key words E- Evaluate steps S- Solve On each word problem, students will have an opportunity to discuss how to solve it and I will facilitate the discussion. I will also teach students how to solve the problem if they have not learned how to solve a particular problem. Students who are comfortable doing the math operations will be able to send answers in chat while I help other students step-by-step. This class is ideal for 2nd-4th graders. In order to be successful in this class, students should know the basics of addition and subtraction with multi-digit numbers. It is okay if students have not learned multiplication or division as we can solve it together. There are no weekly topics as the format of the class is the same each week and we solve a variety of problems based on student need. Here are some examples of problems your learner might see in this class. You can see if this level is a good fit based on the problems. Example #1: John bought a pet frog from a pet shop. If the frog's terrarium was $37, its food and supplies were $24, and the total bill was $83, how much did John pay for the frog? Example #2: The United States hosted the summer Olympic games in 1904. It again hosted 28 years later. What year was it the next time they hosted? Example #3: Greg went out to shovel snow at 4:15 PM. It took him 3 hours and 20 minutes to shovel all the snow. What time did he finish? Example #4: The average water use for each person in the United States is about 50 gallons per day. If I have 5 people in my family, how much water will we use in a week? Example #5: The Cherry Hills Parks Department is expecting a big crowd for the fireworks show. They want to put a fence around the seating area. If the seating area is a square with sides that are 275 yards long, how much fencing will they need?

Teacher expertise and credentials
Texas Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello! I live in Abilene, TX with my husband and 4 children. When I am not busy teaching, I enjoy reading books, completing logic puzzles, doing family genealogy, and cooking new recipes.
I have a B.S. in psychology and a M.Ed. in teacher leadership. I have taught math in grades 4-6 for the past 10 years. I have over 17 years of experience working with children.
My focus on Outschool is math word problems. As a teacher, I encounter so many students who have a negative mindset about school. I want to provide students with positive experiences in education through practice, reinforcement, and encouragement. I hope to see you in one of my classes soon!
