Class experience
THIS CLASS IS FOR TEENS AGED 13+. Please see separate listing for a similar class for ages 9-12. This class is built around feedback and interaction from students looking to develop a "walking around" character for events and festivals, a character for live-action role-play, or enhancing their portrayal of a character for various role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons and GURP games. Week 1: Character discussion and setting ideas Week 2: Present basic character and workshop...
Students will learn character development, improvisation, writing, and costuming as well as basic assemblage skills and storytelling
I hold a BA in Performing and Visual Arts and have spent over 20 years creating and designing costumes for characters with historical context for historical and fantasy events and role-play. In my classes we use video, guests, and unconventional tools to learn the topic together. I design all of my instruction around first creating a safe space, then doing what I call a "Sweep the Corners" review at the start of each session. At the completion of the course, we always Pack Up our learning and set off into our vast world!
Homework Offered
Students will be expected to continue their work on character creation outside of class time. How much time they dedicate to it is up to them; however, at least 30 minutes per week should be expected.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
This is an elective course needing no formal assessment; however, I will work with districts and institutes to ensure that credit is given if allowedGrades Offered
We will utilize resources as much as possible and learners will not be encouraged to make large purchases. This class is about using what we find and creating a character, not a costume. A budget of $35 OR LESS is recommended for students who may want to purchase items outside of their closet specifically because we are wanting to use our imaginations, not our money, to create these characters!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will keep all discussion at a PG-13 level and I expect students to do the same. I will not allow characters that portray traumatic events and will notify parents of any boundary violations by their child.
