Class Experience

Hello, Star Wars fans! If your child lacks confidence and struggles through the writing process, this class is definitely for you! My teaching style is personalized and built around confidence-building and goal-setting, specifically for neurodivergent and reluctant writers (though confident writers are ALWAYS welcome too!). In this 30-minute, no-pressure, stress-free class, students will build on basic writing skills using Star Wars characters, settings, problems, and themes!

Using a variety of strategies including storytelling and illustrations, I'll guide your child through brainstorming ideas, creating a plan using a graphic organizer, and writing out the stories from rough draft to published copy. We'll also focus on skills such as: Including descriptive details to bring characters to life, slowing down the important parts of a story, incorporating a message or a takeaway in the endings, and more. My overall goal in this class is to help your children gain confidence in writing through a topic they are passionate about, while practicing the skills they need to be successful writers.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an on-going class. Learners can pop in and out at any time and be at any stage in the writing process. There is no "beginning" or "end" to this class - when one story is finished, learners will begin another! My classes are community and connection-based, so that learners feel comfortable and safe, regardless of how reluctant or confident they may be as writers.

Upcoming Focus Topics:
Week of 3/7: The Force
Week of 3/14: Adventure
Week of 3/21: Light Sabers
Week of 3/28: Battles

*The Elementary Writer's Club classes are very popular! Please see my other themes, including Minecraft, Pokémon, Super Mario, Building Blocks, and My Little Pony!

REFUND POLICY: This is a weekly, on-going class. Your weekly payment reserves a spot just for your child, and therefore, refunds are not given when your child misses class. If you will be gone for an extended period of time, you may un-enroll your learner to open up their spot for another child.

CLASS RECORDING POLICY: When you pay for one of my classes, you are paying for the LIVE class, just like if this were an in-person class! I do not share recordings of my group classes in order to protect the privacy of all learners. Please feel free to contact me anytime for specific questions related to what we did in class!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm thrilled to have you here in my class. My name is Megan Champion and I'm a 15-year elementary school teacher and a mother of three: My boy/girl twins (8) and my little guy (5). I'm also a proud rescue dog owner of Kepler (1), our Great Pyr mix, and Sadie (14), our tiny Chihuahua mix.

After graduating from the University of Connecticut with my B.A. and my M.A. in Elementary Education and Curriculum & Instruction (respectively) in 2007 (I also have a second M.A. in Reading & Literacy), I began my professional career teaching four years of 6th grade at the elementary level. From there, I went on to teach 5th grade for the last 11 years. I am a teacher of all subjects and all students - not only math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, but I also focus heavily on social and emotional learning in my classroom. Students cannot learn if they don't feel safe and supported, which is why I spend time to get to know my kids on a personal level. Children learn in many different ways, and it's my job to not only find the best, most effective means to instruct them, but to guide them towards understanding who they are as learners, so that they may advocate for themselves in the future.

Finally, as the mother of a neurodivergent child who learns in an "out-of-the-box" way, I know how hard it can be to understand new concepts when presented in only a "traditional" format. Using a variety of methods, I strive to make ALL my students feel comfortable, accepted, and most of all, successful in my class.
