55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class students will learn how to make themselves the favorite babysitter among kids and parents! We will cover topics such as how to best prepare yourself for a successful babysitting job, ways to entertain kids, and the basics of how to care for babies. Students do not need any babysitting experience to attend this class, we are all here to learn together! The class will start with discussing what needs to happen before a babysitting job, including questions to ask the parents. Then we will talk about what to bring to the house, such as important papers, favorite books, or games. Next we will cover different age groups the students might be talking care of, starting with babies. We will cover safety as well as play for each group. The session will have about 45 minutes of instruction, with 10 minutes at the end for discussion. This will be a time for students to ask questions they still have and even share experiences.
Learning Goals
Students will set up a "Babysitting Binder" and bag that they can use right away. Students will know how to diaper, swaddle, and hold a baby. Students will learn safe ways to engage in play with babies, toddlers and young children. Students will discuss what to do in an emergency.

Parental Guidance
We will discuss emergencies such as fire, choking, and injury. These topics will addressed delicately, but can still be stressful to think about.
Supply List
I will provide inserts and forms to complete the Babysitting Binder. Students are encouraged to put together a binder and "supply bag" after the session. They do not need to have these items before the session, however it may be helpful.

Teacher expertise and credentials
At 11 I began babysitting for families in my neighborhood. Ever since then I have loved working with children, and spent the next 10 years babysitting almost every weekend, and picking up nanny jobs during the summer. I then graduated college and began teaching first and second grade. Now I work in a private preschool part time with kids ages 2-5. I also have my own child now, which rounds out my perspective.
During my years as a babysitter and nanny I developed strategies to make it fun and easy. However I also made a lot of mistakes. In college I studied childhood development, which better informed my interactions with kids. I look forward to sharing all these lessons I learned with a new generation of babysitters.
