Class Experience

Intermediate Level
This ongoing illustration class will explore different techniques, styles and subjects each week. We practice observational skills using new references each week, a variety of brushes, smudge tools, eraser textures, color palettes, line weight and style, lighting, shadow, shading, perspective, foreshortening, texture and more. Each week is different, and provides a steady practice that builds over time into confidence and trusted intuition!

Our classes are anchored in kindness, affirmations and fun! We do not use competitions or comparing. Constructive, hamburger-style critiques are offered by the teacher at the student’s request (and many feel safe and confident to ask!). There is a variety of skill level in each group, and we validate and help kids feel good about wherever their skill is. Kids love to share their art and bond over what they love and struggle with. Skills build with time and practice!

✨ We teach kids how to find joy and delight in their practice, which motivates them to do it more. We teach them to see shape, line and form in the most complex references, which builds the confidence to draw, texturize, style and create art from literally anything you can imagine or see!

💥 By trying and practicing a variety of techniques, learners will develop their own style and begin to trust their intuition as their visual vocabulary expands!

👉🏼 Growth Mindset: Over time our students feel powerful and capable in many other areas of life because the work they’ve done in our class shows them that they can do hard things, and they can stick with it.

🤓 All while connecting and laughing together with friends! We work on a variety of subjects based on what kids are asking for: figure drawing, animals, chibi, kawaii, video games, movies, book art, landscapes, anime, manga, fashion design, architecture and more!

EXPERIENCE: Learners in this class should have have some experience with foundational drawing and can move at a lightly moderate pace along with the teacher.

⚡️ Even if your learner has Procreate experience, if they do not have foundational drawing skills, please start at the Beginner class, where they will learn them fast!! I will let you know when it’s time for your learner to move to intermediate! Here is the link to the Beginner class:

MORE about this class:

✨ We practice and discuss the process of art making, from fundamentals like line, shape, value and color, to connecting over what we love, what we struggle with, how to persevere through doubt and disappointment in our art making and ultimately learn how to trust the process and develop trust in our intuition.

✨ We have time to share work and connect over shared interests at the beginning and end of each class! Students do not have to share and it’s never a big deal to pass. Chatting and sharing happen mostly at the beginning and end of class, with the majority of time in the middle spent on step-by-step focused work.

✨ We focus on learning and process—most classes will not end with a “finished” piece. Instead, students will build and practice the tools and techniques needed to continue with the piece between classes!

✨ You can join anytime. We work step-by-step each class to begin to create something new in Procreate so learners can follow along, and when they feel comfortable more advanced students can work at their own pace, modify and enhance their prompt with feedback and guidance from me!

✨Students who want to practice even more, look for one of my self-paced classes to get started! https://outschool.com/classes/4e448664-e6dc-4d6a-8a2c-f0aa08c16445/schedule

✨ This class is collaborative--I want to know what you love to make art about? What do you want to get better at? What do you think of the illustration world/design world? What do you want to know about having a job as an illustrator? I will find a way to incorporate all ideas into classes (as long as they are age-appropriate 😉 :)

✨ Over time, my classes give students the skills and confidence they need to draw and paint anything, anywhere, anytime, and the intuition to create from inside, not for trends.

✨ Many of my students stay with me for years, and when you age out of this group I encourage you to join a teen or cohort class :)

🏳️‍🌈✊🏽 ✨This is an inclusive, anti-racist, LGBTQIA+ safe space where every member can feel empowered to be themselves and create art that reflects the world they dream about! • Bring your ideas and an open mind! • Classes may run up to ten minutes late depending on sharing, learner questions and discussion. • Mics ON is allowed and encouraged (assuming no background noise-in which case just mute while not talking)!

❤️ Self-Paced Classes: If live classes don’t fit your schedule, you want more time for each project, or you simply want MORE of this class: please consider taking my self-paced classes. Self-paced classes are pre-recorded versions of this same class, with step-by-step instruction on making art from references, and you can watch them at your own pace! I plan to continue to build my library of self-paced classes, so send me your topic requests, follow me and check back often!

Learning Goals

Students will learn and practice drawing fundamentals including: breaking complex references into basic shapes and lines, seeing and drawing in perspective, editing proportions and understanding foreshortening.
Students will learn to draw from the shoulder and elbow to sketch loosely, creating dynamic and interesting figures, perspectives and narratives. Use Procreate’s transform tools, layers and transparencies to edit and style fast!
