Class Experience

*** Student needs to take the pre-requisite class: "Become an Illustrator: DRAWING the Whimsical Face" before taking this class.

*The drawing we will paint during this class must be drawn or traced PRIOR TO CLASS*

You can use a drawing you made in the first class or draw a few characters before class, or trace the images I will put in the classroom the day before class. We will begin class by getting right into the painting of our drawing. This class builds on the first class, so there will not be instruction for the drawing so that we have time to paint.

I will demonstrate painting with acrylic paints. We will learn about values of color and where on the face the darker areas are, where the lighter areas are and the lighting that creates these lights and shadows. .. The will learn where the darker values are on the face and how to create a loose, abstract style of painting, blending directly on their paper.

The second half of the class will work on watercolors. (If the student does not have water colors, they can can use acrylics and add water to it, but they will not act just like watercolors, so I recommend a decent starter set from an art supply store for best results). They will learn some tips and tricks about painting "wet on wet" and "wet on dry" to get different effects, and how to layer watercolors to create dimension and texture.

*******NOTE FOR ALL CLASSES******

All of my classes begin on time. I cannot re-start for every late arrival, so students who arrive more than one minute after class time will need to jump in and catch up as they are able, and use the playback video for anything they missed.

I have a very relaxed art studio. I want kids to find their inner artist and not just copy me, so I give them permission to listen and watch what I'm doing with my technique, but then tweak what they are learning to fit THEIR creative vision.

Students are free to keep mics open and converse with me as we go along if there is not excessive background noise in the home. They can ask questions at any time, and can share their work with the others, or not. I do not pressure anyone to share, but give them the opportunity to do so at the end of class IF they desire.

Other Details

Supply List
-Watercolor paper
-Pencil & Eraser (white erasers work best and don't mar the watercolor paper) TO USE PRIOR TO CLASS
-acrylic paints (various skin tones plus white, black, brown, yellow pink, tan, and I like purple for shadows)
-acrylic brushes (small round or small flat will work, plus the thin liner, mentioned above)
-water/rags/papertowels (clean water will be needed when beginning watercolors, so two containers of water mights be easier than -leaving to to dump and refresh it)

The student will choose the skin color and choose several shades of paint for that color. For example, a lighter skin might need a medium pink, tan, white and lavender/purple for shadows. A darker brown skin may use a dark brown, white, tan possibly a little yellow or red, and purple for shadow. The exact colors of paint aren't important, but darker values of paint (a medium pink instead of a very pale pink) and WHITE (for creating lighter values of all the colors) are a must!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a full time Gig/LIVE Caricature Artist for weddings, corporate events, parties, etc. and while that is my “bread & butter”, I love teaching what I’ve learned to kids on Outschool.

I have an education degree and many years of experience teaching and creating art, from fine art to crafty projects, from artful home projects to designing and painting theatre sets for plays and musicals on the stage.

I love to teach children the value of creating art that is a personal and meaningful expression of themselves, helping them loosen up and enjoy the process, the missteps and the "That's good enough to sell!" moments. LOL.
Open mics and sharing are encouraged.

I teach from my whimsical art studio in North Carolina and hope to see your child in a class soon. ~Penny

** Look for CARICATURE ART CAMPS coming up this summer. Each week, we will learn a new technique and enjoy working on our projects together in class. Three and 5-day camps will be available.
