Class Experience

**This class serves as a pre-requisite for my ongoing class/club "Caricature: Drawing People as Cartoons"**

The student will learn what constitutes a 'whimsical' character and how they different from a 'realistic' one, and we will look at samples of both.

Students will learn to draw faces in a whimsical style by learning to create different shapes for the head, then divide the face with guidelines. They will then place eyes, nose and mouth on the guidelines, and then learning some basic shading to create the contours of the face and to create "shadows" and "highlights" so that faces look dimensional and not 'flat'.

I will be drawing and demonstrating as I go and the student will follow along and is free to stop me and ask questions at any point. In the last few minutes of class, I will demonstrate how I use colored pencils to create color, shadows and dimensions of my face.

(* I will be offering a follow-up class for 'painting whimsical faces' in the near future).

Learning Goals

The student will learn the difference between 'whimsical' and 'realistic' faces, and samples will be shown from great artists.

Students will learn to create circles and ovals and to lightly draw a 'grid' on which to place the features of the face. We will discuss how the grid can be altered to create different types of whimsical faces (younger vs. older, for example).

Students will be shown examples of facial features and how to draw them and then can choose how to create their own whimsical face.

**BASIC CLASS NOTES** (Please read)

I begin on time. If a student is late, they will need to jump in and catch up as they are able. I cannot re-start the class for each late arrival. You may request a recording of the class if child arrives late or ends up being unable to attend.

{If a PAINTING class has a drawing or element to print out and trace, please have this done BEFORE the start of class (it will be posted in the classroom several hours before start of class). For these classes, we will not be taking the time to draw that element in class, but will begin with painting our piece, so the student will be woefully behind and unable to get the painting instruction needed if not done before class.  They are welcome to draw their own version of what I post, but need to do so before start of that class as we will begin painting when class begins.}

I encourage creativity and self-expression. Students may veer from what I am doing to find their own 'voice'. Also, I encourage interaction during class (please be polite by sharing talk time and muting when there is background noise in the home). Otherwise, I welcome questions as we go along and open mics.

If your student enjoys this art time and would like to attend my art clubs, please look for these on Outschool or message me for times that might suit better, now that school has begun.

I soooo look forward to seeing your child in class.

Other Details

Supply List
-Journal or piece of paper (watercolor, cardstock, etc.). I recommend a Canson XL "watercolor" wire-bound journal as a good beginners journal. The watercolor paper can stand up to paint and water, if the student chooses to paint their faces, but works well for simple sketching as well as glue and collage material. They can be found in many Michaels stores, but I ordered my most recent one from Amazon: https://amzn.to/2XzEI0Q

-soft lead pencil (4B)
-white easer
- blending stump (optional - student can use small finger to blend)

Optional: colored pencils (I will do a short demo at the end, showing how I use them to create contours and shadows in the face.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a full time Gig/LIVE Caricature Artist for weddings, corporate events, parties, etc. and while that is my “bread & butter”, I love teaching what I’ve learned to kids on Outschool.

I have an education degree and many years of experience teaching and creating art, from fine art to crafty projects, from artful home projects to designing and painting theatre sets for plays and musicals on the stage.

I love to teach children the value of creating art that is a personal and meaningful expression of themselves, helping them loosen up and enjoy the process, the missteps and the "That's good enough to sell!" moments. LOL.
Open mics and sharing are encouraged.

I teach from my whimsical art studio in North Carolina and hope to see your child in a class soon. ~Penny

** Look for CARICATURE ART CAMPS coming up this summer. Each week, we will learn a new technique and enjoy working on our projects together in class. Three and 5-day camps will be available.
