All students who complete the course will be sent a certificate of completion as well as award ribbons conferred for their placement in the in-class tournament. Report cards will also be made available to parents by request, at any time during or at the end of the week, detailing their child's progress.Class Experience
This class is for young learners with little or no exposure to chess. We'll start by teaching the foundational basics of the game, and then build upon that foundation to introduce key strategies for winning games. Each day's lesson starts with about 45 minutes of explanation and discussion, followed by, for the remaining duration of each class, virtual chess games between the classmates, supervised by the instructor. Learning Goals
By the end of this course, students will have a thorough foundational understanding of the game of chess, how to plan ahead, and how to win against their peers. They will also leave with a basic understanding of how competitive chess tournaments are structured, and will feel prepared to compete against peers of their age and skill levels.

Central New York Chess is a New York State registered Non Profit Organization, and an affiliate of the US Chess Federation. We are on a mission to teach critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and other life and social skills through scholastic chess instruction, to today's youth. Our classes are primarily directed at elementary & middle-school-aged children, and are organized into 8-week semesters of once-weekly 60-minute long classes (8 meetings total), each comprised of approximately 30 minutes of lecture format followed by approximately 30 minutes of organized play between the students. We've been teaching these classes locally for years, but now are excited to share them with the rest of the world thanks to Outschool!
