Class Experience

In this one time art class, students will draw and paint a narwhal along with me as I demonstrate each step. Students will first draw along with me as we design the shape of a narwhal and decide where on their papers to place the narwhal and some glacial ice. This will introduce the concept of composition. Next, students will learn how to use watercolor painting techniques to create an abstract background for their artwork using cool colors. Students will color in their narwhal with warm neutral colors. We will use the wet on wet technique, color mixing, and various brush strokes with different size brushes. We will talk about how to contrast cool colors and warm colors. We will discuss foreground and background as it relates to composition.

My teaching style is relaxed. Students can go at their own pace. I will encourage students to show me their artwork along the way so that I can give feedback that is both educational and enthusiastic. Learners will get to interact with me and with each other, while creating their own artwork and watching my demonstration. At the end of class, students can show their artwork to each other and to me. If students don't feel comfortable sharing, students may opt to post a photo of the finished project in the classroom.

My classes are safe spaces for young artists to explore their creative talents. All skill levels are welcome. Students will be free to use their imagination and make artwork in a way that feels right for them. In my art classes I emphasize that there is no right or wrong way to make art. Students are welcome to use my project ideas as a jumping board and to be as creative and unique as they would like.

Any prior basic painting experience is recommended, but not required, for this class.

Hello! I am an Art Educator and Artist. I love teaching art to all ages, especially elementary school and middle school. My art classes include watercolor painting, acrylic painting, drawing, elementary art projects that work on skill building, and learning about art history through fun projects about artists - including Non-Western and Women artists.

I teach art from my heart and aim to build self esteem in my students through the arts. I challenge students to find their inner artist through creativity and self expression. I believe in the process of art, individual expression, creative thinking, and problem solving. Each art project is designed to develop technical skills, artistic interpretation, and unique artwork. We have lots of fun while making artwork and socializing is encouraged during my art classes.

My art background began as a child. I loved to learn how to paint or draw anything and everything. After receiving a BFA in Graphic Design, I became a children's textile designer in the fashion industry in NYC. While in New York, I attended fine arts classes at the Art Student's League and The New School. I moved to New York State's Hudson Valley, and am inspired daily by the landscapes and nature around me. I also am inspired by my pet cats, who may visit the classroom once in a while.
