Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
Beginner Level
This course will be an interactive exploration of beat. Learners will show the beat with body percussion and optional instruments as they analyze music for beat, tempo and meter. (This course is a compilation of the classes Beat, Beat Feel the Beat 1-4.)

Learners will be provided with a variety of visuals through screen sharing and a document camera. 

Age-appropriate activity sheets will be provided for learners to facilitate understanding - 1) BEAT letters sheet, 2) beat tapping sheets, 3) fast and slow, 4) sets of beats.
Learning Goals
*Class Objective - Learners will discover that most music has a steady beat, that beat can be faster or slower and that beats are grouped into sets.
*National Music Standard MU:Cr1.1.Ka - With guidance, explore and experience music concepts (such as beat and melodic contour).

Syllabus

5 Lessons
over 5 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Beat is Steady
 After introductions, learners will play the beat with a simple rhyme, teaching that the beat is steady. Then learners will play “Beat Freeze” where learners show the beat to different musical selections and freeze when the music stops. Next, learners will identify the beat within their bodies - their heart beat. We will explore the beat using learner suggested rhymes or songs. Finally, learners will demonstrate the beat while listening to a musical picture book.

Lesson 2:
Beats in Sounds and Music
 Learners will review the steady beat rhyme. Then learners will play “Beat/No Beat” where learners determine beat in the world and beat in music. Next, learners will use a beat tapping sheet to practice the beat to learner suggested songs and rhymes. Finally, learners will demonstrate the beat while listening to a musical picture book.

Lesson 3:
Fast and Slow Beats
 Learners will review the steady beat rhyme and start learning a song about beat. Learners will discover the music teams for fast and slow. Next, learners will play “Fast or Slow” where learners identify the tempo of different musical selections.  Learners will demonstrate fast and slow with a classic story. Finally, learners will fast or slow rhythms to a musical picture book.

Lesson 4:
Patterns of Beats
 Learners will review the steady beat song. Learners will identify items in sets. Then learners will play “Find the Beat” where learners move and show the pattern of beats - 2, 3, or 4 (with guidance). Learners will be introduced to the quarter note as a transition to the concept of rhythm. Finally, learners will demonstrate beat with a musical picture book.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Learners may need assistance cutting the "fast" and "slow" cards apart. The handout may also be folded instead of cut.
Supply List
Learners can use percussion instruments or found instruments from home to tap the beat during parts of the class.

Learner will need coloring supplies to tap the beat sheet and color class handouts.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello! My name is Mrs. McArthur and I teach MUSIC! I am a Texas certified all-level music teacher with 29 years of teaching experience, 26 years in public schools and 3 years online and homeschool experience. I have taught preschool through eighth grade General Music and Choir classes. I received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with an emphasis in vocal music from Oklahoma Baptist University.

I believe that every learner can make music! Learners need a variety of experiences to learn music skills, including visual, aural and kinesthetic. Given sequential steps, students can achieve well beyond the expectations. When creativity is modeled, learners discover that making mistakes improves music. Learners need opportunities to be creative with choices so they can create on their own terms and interests. By making connections to science, social studies, math and beyond, students learn that subjects don’t exist in isolation. Music is the universal language and learners deserve a chance to explore the world through a musical lens!
