Bark Academy: Teaching Kids About Dogs and Dog Training!

Class
In this 5-week course, students will learn about dogs, including communication, breeds, and more. They'll become knowledgeable and empowered canine companions, with live demonstrations featuring a dog on screen.

Beginner - Intermediate Level

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Dog breeds 101
Students will gain an understanding about the unique AKC dog groups participate in a creative design a dog activity.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Safety around dogs
Students will walk away from this lesson with an increased knowledge of how to interact with dogs safely. Focus will be on interpretation of dog body language. Knowledge will be tested with an interactive jeopardy type game.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
So you want to train a dog
Students will become familiar with the various training techniques that build a positive connection with our canine companions. Students will explore reasons behind each technique and will demonstrate their skills at completion of this lesson.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
What's on my plate? Dog nutrition edition (with baking component)
Students will learn what food is safe and unsafe for dogs and how to give dogs a correct nutritional diet. Learners will also participate in a hands on dog treat baking lesson and will be encouraged to donate completed treats to needy canines in their local shelters.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
What's in a brush? Dog grooming 101
Students will become familiar with common dog grooming tools and their uses and will be able to test their knowledge in a fun yet challenging identification game.
Learns will be able to:

Identify and differentiate between various dog breeds and their characteristics.

Understand safety protocols and best practices for interacting with dogs.

Learn basic grooming techniques to maintain a dog's health and hygiene.

Gain knowledge of proper nutrition for dogs, including safe and unsafe foods.

Develop basic dog training skills and principles.

Apply learned concepts through hands-on activities, such as baking simple dog treats (includes an introduction to philanthropy).
Hi! My name is Mrs. Katie and I have been working with animals in various settings for my whole professional career (15+ yrs). I graduated with a Bachelors in Science studying Animal Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation and minored in Anthrozoology. I am a Certified Humane Education Practitioner and my passion is in animal education programs. I currently work as an Educator in an animal enrichment and veterinary program and I work with kids ages 3-17yrs!

I have previously held positions as a dog trainer for a popular pet chain and I have been the general manager of a doggie daycare facility. In addition to that, I was a dog groomer for a number of years, and I am the happy owner to my sweet dog, Nahla who students can expect to see on screen during some sessions (as well as some of my other animal friends.)
nutrition week will require the following ingredients:
one 15 oz can pumpkin
2 c whole wheat or brown rice flour
3 eggs
t. cinnamon
t. parsley
small cookie cutters
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
students will be encouraged to practice training skills outside of class.
