Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Do you want your child to have access to quality literature that discusses racial identity, diverse families, gender expression, and kids occasionally being mischievous? Join me, The Banned Books Librarian, for age-appropriate and hand-selected books that your child will love! Kids will listen to books, sing songs, create simple art, and wiggle, wiggle, wiggle while they learn about themselves and others. This is not a "sit and get" story hour, but one that is full of engagement and laughter. No previous exposure to the books is necessary, but all books are listed and can be previewed by families who want to ensure they are a good fit for their child.

Intrigued, but still needing more info about the "banned" books? Please check out www.commonsensemedia.org where you will find age recommendations and reviews.

Learning Goals

Participants will learn:
- self-acceptance and self-love
- the beauty of diversity
- it's healthy to learn about different racial identities
- it's perfectly normal to be yourself, even if it doesn't always conform to what is expected of you
- families are families, no matter who is in them
- a little history of marginalized communities

We will also work on decoding words, recognizing shapes, and whatever bits of learning are an organic fit with each book. I just can't help but seize those learning opportunities!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
If acknowledgment of characters who are LGBTQIA+ is uncomfortable for you, this is not your story hour. Most books appropriate for ages 4-6 that are challenged/banned include protagonists who are "gender non-conforming". Some books have also been challenged or banned because of detailing racial discrimination experienced by characters, while others have been banned because parents did not approve of some characters' behaviors (spying, disobeying adults, unconventional speech patterns). While I have used my professional judgment in the selection of stories, please also check out www.commonsensemedia.org for age recommendations and reviews. Please keep in mind this story hour is for "banned" or "challenged" books and you as the parent/guardian are signing up for a celebration of characters with diverse identities. However, should any of the content prove to not be a good match for your child's needs, I welcome your feedback and will use it to inform how I select books. Please send me your concerns or questions using Outschool's "Message the Teacher" button. I will respond promptly and thoughtfully. Overall, you'll find my selections very wholesome and likely question why many have been banned!
