In this flex class, kids learn how to bake six incredible desserts from around the world while learning about the country it came from. Plus, your family gets to enjoy eating the treats!

What's included

Homework
2-4 hours per week. Students can make the baking project on their own time, take a photo, and upload it to the classroom, along with a sentence or two about what they thought of the dessert and / or the video. Students have the option to participate in the final review game live with the teacher at the end of the class.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner Level
In this flexible class, kids learn about six countries, focusing on one each session: Italy, Ireland, Greece, France, Montenegro, Scotland. 

AN OVERVIEW OF THE CLASS:

WEEK ONE 

Session: Italy
Students watch a 20 min video from the teacher which is posted in the classroom which will include an introduction to Italy's language, key landmarks, music, and more, presented by the teacher and her daughter in a dynamic format. It will also include a detailed tutorial of how to make the Italian Tiramisu. The post will include the ingredients and supplies needed to complete the baking project. 

Session: Greece 
Students watch a 20 min video from the teacher which is posted in the classroom which will include an introduction to the Greek language, key landmarks, music, and more. It will also include a detailed tutorial of how to make the Greek No-Bake Cheesecake. The post will include the ingredients and supplies needed to complete the baking project. 

Students are encouraged to share photos of the desserts they've made each week by Friday, when the teacher will view and comment on the learners' work. Each student will receive a personalized comment or video from the teacher with feedback and encouragement as well.

WEEK TWO 

Session: United Kingdom
Students watch a 20 min video from the teacher which is posted in the classroom which will include an introduction to the cultures of the United Kingdom, key landmarks, music, with a great deal of of historical context. It will also include a detailed tutorial of how to make the Millionaire Shortbread. The post will include the ingredients and supplies needed to complete the baking project. 

Session: Ireland 
Students watch a 20 min video from the teacher which is posted in the classroom which will include an introduction to Ireland's language, key landmarks, music, and more, presented by the teacher and her daughter in a dynamic format. It will also include a detailed tutorial of how to make the classic Irish Soda Bread. The post will include the ingredients and supplies needed to complete the baking project. 

Students are encouraged to share photos of the desserts they've made by Friday, when the teacher will view and comment on the learners' work. Each student will receive a personalized comment or video from the teacher with feedback and encouragement as well.

WEEK THREE 

Monday Session: Montenegro
Students watch a 20 min video from the teacher which is posted in the classroom which will include an introduction to the special culture of the tiny country of Montenegro, including its key landmarks, fun facts, language, and more. It will also include a detailed tutorial of how to make a Balkan Apple Cake. The post will include the ingredients and supplies needed to complete the baking project. 

Wednesday Session: France 
Students watch a 20 min video from the teacher which is posted in the classroom which will include an introduction to France's language, key landmarks, history, and more. It will also include a detailed tutorial of how to make the French macarons. The post will include the ingredients and supplies needed to complete the baking project. 

Students are encouraged to share photos of the desserts they've made by Friday, when the teacher will view and comment on the learners' work. Each student will receive a personalized comment or video from the teacher with feedback and encouragement as well.

FINAL WEEK 

During the final week, learners will be reflect on what they've learned and have the option to join a live session with the teacher to discuss their favorite desserts while participating in a fun review game using the trivia and fun facts which they've learned about the six countries during the course. The game will also include baking terminology the kids have learned.

Learning Goals

In the sessions, students will learn:
- Where the country is located 
- Several famous landmarks of the country
- Geographic features of the country 
- Some of the country's cultures and traditions
- Fun facts about the country

In the sessions, students will also practice: 
- Reading and understanding a recipe
- Math skills, through measuring and weighing ingredients
- Hand skills such as chopping, stirring, folding, layering, and more
- Adapting ingredients as needed for substitutions
- Problem solving if things go wrong
- Food presentation and plating techniques
- Orally describing what they have made and presenting it to the class

Parental Guidance
Parents please note that this class requires use of knives and the oven, and it does require close adult supervision. Safety first!

Cooking supplies needed throughout the course are the same as most kitchens already have such as: 
- Oven & oven mitt
- Stove 
- Pot
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Baking bowls
- Mixing spoons
- Hand mixer 
- Baking sheet
- Cake pan
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Additionally, I have traveled to 48 countries around the world, and I have studied and taught various languages. I love these six countries and am excited to present their culture and their baked goods with students.
