In this live, one-time class with a certified math teacher, students will learn how to find patterns in place value and think about numbers that are ten times bigger or smaller than themselves. All math facts will be related to bees, incorporating unique facts about the importance of bees and what they do. Students will design a Bee Hotel for the garden, understanding the importance of bees, and place value will be naturally interwoven into the lessons! Having a solid understanding of our...
The learning outcome for this class is: 1. I can find patterns using place value. ~1.NBT.C.5- Given a two-digit number, mentally find 10 more or 10 less than the number, without having to count; explain the reasoning used. ~2.NBT.B.8- Mentally add 10 or 100 to a given number 100-900, and mentally subtract 10 or 100 from a given number 100-900. ~4.NBT.A.1- Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 70070=10 by applying concepts of place value and division
I hold a standard teaching license for K-6 elementary education, with three years of experience teaching math to students who needed extra support with foundational skills. I have taught for five years in public schools and two years homeschooling a family member in middle school.

All is optional- it is really based on what you already have or what you want to invest in! Logs (can drill holes in them) Hay or dried grass Terra Cotta pots Bamboo shoots Bricks Sod Pallets Anything that provides holes for bees to crawl in and make their home.
Ensure that you are careful when approaching your Bee Hotel after you set it up. Keeping a safe distance is ideal after you make it, but go and observe and see who is living there! If you decide to change its location or need to approach it for some reason, either wear a bee suit or loose clothing with long sleeves and long pants. You can put a rubber band at the bottom of your pants so they don't crawl up your pants either, but this is likely not necessary. Consider placing it in a location where there is low traffic and where you won't have to be near it to mow.
