55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
The students will learn about the parts of atom which include protons, neutrons and electrons. I will discuss features of each subatomic particle and its location in the atom (nucleus or electron cloud). The students will draw a model of a atom and label its parts. We will build a three dimensional model of a Carbon atom. Learners may build their own model if they have the supplies from the materials list. I will discuss how atoms of different elements are identified. There is no required experience or knowledge for this class.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to identify the basic parts of an atom and draw a model of atom. They will be able to describe features of each subatomic particle. If they had supplies, students will build a 3D model of atom with electron rings.

Supply List
Diagram: Paper, markers (fine point), pencil Model: medium sized beads 2 colors - 12 of each small sized beads 3rd color -12 (small as a seed bead is good but make sure it fits on your wire.) wire - thin (I use 16 or 18 gauge but other thickness will work, Test small bead to see if wire fits through it) box or stand to hang model (maybe 18 inches tall or more) (Optional) Hot Glue (If wire is thick an ADULT could help with some hot glue to stick beads together) (Optional) I can make this work with 3 clay colors and wire, may also need glue.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education
I am a middle school teacher with 35 years of "in" school teaching experience in science, math and technology which I will now apply to my Outschool classroom.
I will bring the STEAM experience to each lesson. I believe in an interactive approach to learning without watering down the content. I incorporate technology, art and engineering within my lessons. I believe students should be curious about science and math. No question is too small. The more they learn, the more they discover there is to learn! My two grandsons (ages 8 and 10) get excited when I arrive with exciting science and math lessons. They never know what to expect on my next visit.
I can't wait to start enrich the learning process of young minds through Outschool.
Full STEAM Ahead!
