Class Experience

This course consists of four sessions. We will begin with an introduction and work problems throughout all the sessions to make sure they are retaining the information.

1) We will begin with reviewing matter. Student will learn the vocabulary and be able to locate the parts of an atom. We will create a foldable for students to study each part of an atom. After class student will create an atom model.
They will be able to answer the following questions.
What is the smallest part of matter?
What is an atom?
What are the three main parts of an atom?
Where are these parts located in an atom?

2- We will begin learning about the elements, including their chemical symbols, atomic mass and atomic number. Students will practice finding elements on the Periodic Table based on different atomic masses, numbers or symbols. Students will complete a scavenger hunt finding elements on the Periodic Table.

3- We will learn more about the Periodic Table and how it is constructed. Students will learn where metals, nonmetals and metalloids are located on the Table. Students will demonstrate what they learned by creating a cube by choosing one element.

4- Molecules are cool. We will begin with the water molecule. We will progress to other common molecules and how elements combine. Dangerous mixtures will be discussed and why combining specific chemicals can be harmful. Students will choose to complete a model of three different molecules.
What is a molecule?
What are molecules made of?
How do we know what a molecule is?
What does the formula for a molecule tell us?
Is every part of water, water molecules?

A quizziz will be at the end of the four sessions to see how the students retained the information provided.
Learning Goals
Student will learn what an atom is and what it consists of. They will learn about the Periodic Table and how it structured. They will know how to find an element based on the amount of protons. Students will also learn how a molecule is formed and what the formula of a molecule can tell them.
