US Grade 4 - 7
Do you have a love of space and astronomy? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to visit other planets? Do you have an interest in STEAM classes? If so, then come on a Grand Tour of the Solar System where you will learn some exciting facts about the eight planets and the dwarf planet loved by everyone alike, Pluto! In this class, you will learn basic facts about each of the planets and Pluto, including how long it takes for each planet to revolve around the Sun, how long a day is on each planet, as well as how many moons they have. You will also learn some fun facts that are unique to each planet in the Solar System, including how Mars is home to the largest volcano in the Solar System as well as cool facts about Jupiter’s Great Red Spot. After your journey through the cosmos, you will get to explore a planet of your choice and share what you discovered at the end of the class. We will begin with a warmup where students are asked about which planet they would like to visit and why before embarking on a journey through outer space, learning about each of the planets as well as Pluto. A slide show presentation with photos of the planets and Pluto will help make the journey come alive as students explore the Solar System. After the presentation, they will read about a planet of their choice. Using weblinks provided on a slide show presentation, they will search for at least 3 to 4 facts about their chosen planet which they will discuss with the class. If students wish, they can also read about dwarf planets, exoplanets, moons, stars, galaxies and anything else related to space. Participation is always welcome and encouraged. Students are invited to ask questions and make comments at any time during the class. Anyone who does not feel comfortable sharing verbally may share on chat. This is a class that is designed for beginning learners as well as learners who have knowledge about space and the Solar System. Students are encouraged to bring a love of STEAM, space, astronomy, planets and a curiosity and desire to learn about the Solar System to the class.
Learning Goals
Students will learn basic details about each of the planets, namely how long a year and a day is on each planet, the number of moons each planet has as well as unique fun facts about each planet. Then they will learn 3 to 4 things about a planet of their choice.
