Class Experience

This is Part 5 of my Musical Signing Series. Although experience in Sign Language is not required, students have an advantage when they are familiar with the ASL alphabet.

Students are encouraged to complete Parts 1-4 before enrolling in Part 5, but it is not required.

Through videos, demonstration, games and participation, students will be introduced to the art of Musical ASL. The students will be given lessons to learn the vocabulary, or "Lyrics", to a song and how to perform the song in their own unique and artistic way, while remaining accurate with the signs that are being used.

Each week, students will:

Week 1: Learn word-by-word song lyrics
Week 2; Learn to sign in lyrical order (PSE)
Week 3: Interact with peers
Week 4: Build ASL Vocabulary

Proper finger and hand formation will accompany each new sign, while encouraging self expression in presentation.

Students will be taught between 1 and 3 songs through the duration of this 4 week session, depending on the length and complexity of each song. For example, I can not teach the class how to sign the song "Bohemian Rhapsody" in a single day, and will not take all four weeks to teach them to sign "Baby Shark". (These are not the songs on my lesson plan, just an example). Songs are chosen based on the average age and interests of students enrolled in each section.

Students will also be encouraged (but not required) to interact with each other during the sessions to practice the new signs introduced during class.

Handouts will be given in class and between classes to encourage practice (which is key). Videos will be available each week on the classroom message board showing what was taught during the lesson.
