Class experience

5 lessons//5 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Fingerspelling
We will learn the manual alphabet (how to fingerspell) then play several rounds of Kahoot in which students will practice quickly identifying and recognizing fingerspelled letters and words. We will then play ASL Scattergories, a fun word category game with an ASL twist. If time permits, we will wrap up with a round of ASL-styled hangman.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Color Signs
We will spend up to the first ten minutes reviewing color signs. The teacher will fingerspell each color sign to introduce each new sign in order to build upon fingerspelling receptive skills (the ability to read fingerspelling). We will then use Kahoot to review the manual alphabet and practice the newly learned color signs. Finally, we will play a game in which students will race to read fingerspelled colors using a video from 5 Guys ASL YouTube channel.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Food Signs
We will spend up to the first fifteen minutes of class learning or reviewing ASL food vocabulary. We'll then play a game pertaining to fingerspelling receptiveness and foods using videos from the 5 Guys ASL YouTube channel that will be shown in class. Finally, we'll play Empire, a competitive game where each individual looks to become the winning empire. This game will incorporate ASL fingerspelling, receptive skills, and practice using the food signs.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Numbers and Counting
We will spend up to the first ten minutes of class learning or reviewing the numbers in ASL. We will then play the "15 Number Game" in which the goal is to successfully count to fifteen without any two people simultaneously signing a number. Then we'll play a number game called "21," a fast-paced counting game in which players are eliminated if they sign the number 21. Finally, we'll play a numerical trivia game using Kahoot!
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Animal Signs
We will spend up to the first fifteen minutes of class learning or reviewing animal signs. For the rest of the class period, we will play virtual four on a couch, a team-based game in which students try to land four members of their team onto the virtual couch.
This class is taught in English.
Students will better their fingerspelling receptive skills while adding to their ASL vocabulary repertoire.
I have been learning American Sign Language since my introduction to the visual language at age two and have taught beginning ASL to 5-12-year-olds at a local homeschool coop for the past three years. I've also learned a host of ASL games through attending ASL meetups and deaf events and I love using games as an opportunity for students to learn.
It's helpful for students to already know the fingerspelled alphabet, but it's not a requirement and we will take some time out of the first class to learn/review the alphabet.
Students will need paper and a writing utensil.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Handspeak's ASL to English Reverse Dictionary link: https://www.handspeak.com/word/asl-eng/#

We will view videos from 5-Guys ASL YouTube channel. Link: https://www.youtube.com/@5GuysASL/videos

We'll also play Kahoot during some class sessions. https://kahoot.it/

We'll use Dr. Bill Vicars ASL fingerspelling practice tool. https://asl.ms/

I'll make use of an online Scattegories game that generates questions for students to answer, but this resource will only be shown in class and students will not be sent the link https://swellgarfo.com/scattergories/#;:I;FNI
