Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Science from Cameron University
Hello! My name is Kristy Robertson and I am an American Sign Language teacher with a passion for teaching this enriching language. I am an enthusiastic learner and enjoy learning new skills and interests.
I have a Bachelors of Science degree, ESL and teaching certifications. I have experience teaching ASL and English online for over 9 years now, and interpreting for hearing impaired children for over 4 years. I have taught children from age 3 to 18 years old. I have taught ASL online, in public schools and in my community. I am a CODA which stands for child of a deaf adult. I have been signing my whole life as both of my parents are profoundly deaf. ASL is my first language. Hearing loss is hereditary in my family and I have a lot of family members with hearing loss including one of my own children. So sharing American Sign Language with the world is something that is personally really important to me and something I take pride in. Teaching ASL here on Outschool has truly been a blessing to me.
In all of my classes, students will learn how to communicate using ASL. I provide handouts at the end of all of my class that give students a resource to help them practice signs outside of class. These handouts have pictures of the signs we learn in class. This is a great way for students to create their own ASL book to use for learning. I also provide additional enriching activities in my lessons for students to do throughout the week to strengthen the skills they learned in class.
I offer classes that are taught live, and classes that are taught through recorded lessons where students can take the lessons at their own pace and schedule. I offer the following classes:
- ON-GOING beginner and intermediate level ASL (ASL 1-4, each class is 16-20 weeks long)
- taught through live classes
- students can join at any time
- pay weekly
- students can pause or stop their enrollment at any time
- beginner and intermediate level ASL COURSES (ASL 1-4, each class is 16 weeks long)
- taught through live classes
- pay for whole course upfront or pay weekly
- classes build but late enrollment is accepted as students will get previous lessons
- SELF-PACED beginner, intermediate and advanced level ASL (ASL 1-3, each class is 12 weeks long)
- taught through recorded lessons
- students have flexibility by setting their own schedule
- students choose any date to start the class
- students participate at their own pace
- students can pay for the whole class upfront or pay weekly
All of the above classes are offered in 2 different age groups. I have a younger age group of 7-11 year old students and an older age group of 12-17 year old students. Those age suggestions are flexible and students who are a year outside of the age suggestions are welcome to join either class. For example, 6 year old students and 18 year old students may join the classes. As well as 10-12 year old students can choose which class they prefer and feel more comfortable in.
I feel students learn best when they feel comfortable, safe and are having fun so I try to use games and fun activities in my classes and provide a stress free, relaxed and comfortable environment to learn in. I have a love for children and teaching and truly enjoy working with students. In my spare time, I enjoy doing DIY projects, reading, exploring new places and spending time with my family.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions. I hope to share my love of ASL with you!
