Arts and Crafts with Aubrey: Beginner/Intermediate Embroidery Designs (FLEX 14-18 yrs)

This is a 4-week FLEX class in which students learn to do a variety of embroidery stitches. A different pattern will be provided for each of the four projects we will be completing. These patterns are fun beg/int floral designs.

What's included

Homework
2-4 hours per week. Embroidery takes time and patience! Although stitches are shown in depth in the videos, students will need to continue working on their own to finish the projects. They are always welcome to go back and watch the video as many times as needed while completing their projects. Learners are encouraged to post weekly on the classroom page.

Class Experience

**THIS IS A FLEX CLASS AND DOES NOT HAVE LIVE MEETINGS**

Students will learn a variety of basic embroidery stitches including the backstitch, stem, chain, satin, french knot, lazy daisy, fishbone, and woven wheel stitches.

I have created four floral patterns for 5-inch hoops that I will send to enrolled learners. They are welcome to create their own pattern, or use the one I provide. A pattern using a 7-inch hoop, specifically designed to practice stitches will also be provided in the first class. This will enable students to have a designated space to practice the stitches before moving on to their projects.

Videos for each step of the designs will be shown to help the learners easily follow along while embroidering their projects. I will demonstrate and explain each stitch on the practice hoop that includes each of the listed stitches. After students feel comfortable with each sewing technique, they will then follow along with the step-by-step videos and learn how to incorporate them into the final embroidery pattern. Once learners master these stitches, they will be able to utilize them in countless embroidery patterns.

I will post photos of the supplies and number of thread colors for each project, as well as a supply list to make a trip to the craft store easier. These photos and lists will be posted on Wednesdays (if their class starts on Saturday) or on Fridays (if their class starts on Monday) by 2:00 a.m. MST. Instructional videos and patterns (in PDF format) will be posted on Saturday/Monday mornings by 2:00 a.m. MST so learners can embroider these patterns whenever it best fits their schedules.

I will be available throughout the 4-week class for questions and comments and will do my best to respond quickly.

Because this is a flex class, learners are encouraged to post weekly on the classroom pages, as well as interact with other learners through posts and comments. Our class will be enriched as we encourage and give suggestions to one another. I will ask questions about the stitches and embroidery process at the end of each week. Students should be prepared to:
• Praise and encourage one another by sharing embroidery experiences.
• Comment on the photos posted by other learners.
• Ask questions of other students in regards to their stitches/embroidery.
• Share at least 1 photo of your embroidery projects with the class along with how you liked the stitch techniques.

My class is a safe place to learn, grow, make mistakes, laugh together, feel confident, and find new ways to be successful. I want everyone to feel safe and happy while creating sewing projects. Come and embroider with me!

Quick Class Schedule Overview:
Week 1: Lazy Daisy Tutorial
Since this is our first week, we will discuss some organizational techniques as well as creating our patterns. We will learn and focus on these stitches/techniques: backstitch, french knot, and lazy daisy stitches. These will be practiced through completing a floral pattern in which the students can select the colors for their project.

Week 2: Detailed Daisies Tutorial
We will learn and focus on these stitches/techniques: stem and satin stitches. These will be practiced through completing a new floral pattern featuring different flowers than previously learned.

Week 3: Bee Happy Tutorial
We will learn and focus on two different techniques for stitching leaves. Because leaves are so common in floral arrangements, it is always nice to have more than one technique or variety of leaf to sew.

Week 4: Rosy Tutorial
We will learn and focus on these stitches/techniques: fishbone and woven wheel stitches. This last class combines previous techniques and also teaches some fun new stitches.
Learning Goals
Students will:
• Learn a variety of embroidery stitches.
• Learn how to incorporate multiple stitches into an embroidery hoop design.
• Share experiences with one another through the classroom.
• Increase confidence in using embroidery stitches and techniques.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Students will be using a needle and scissors for every class. It is very common to accidentally prick yourself with the needle while embroidering so please encourage your students to use caution. A thimble and parental supervision is strongly encouraged to help the learner while sewing.
Supply List
The supply lists and amounts of thread colors will change each week, depending on the type of embroidery project. If the student's class begins on a Saturday, this information will be sent out on Wednesdays. If their class begins on a Monday, this information will be sent out on Fridays. This will help learners plan and prepare for the upcoming week. I will also include photos of the supplies to make it easier for students to see and gather what they need for class.

Upon enrollment, learners will receive a video and message showing the embroidery kit that I use which includes almost everything needed for the classes. The main supplies needed for each class will be:
5-inch embroidery hoop
Fabric to embroider on
A pencil or other item to trace the pattern onto to the fabric
Needle and embroidery thread
Scissors
(7-inch embroidery hoop is needed to practice the stitches throughout the course)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been sewing since I was very young because I love making costumes and dressing up. Later, I got involved in embroidery, and I enjoy spending time creating patterns as well as completing projects. I am excited to share this wonderful hobby with youth and create an excitement for them to further their skills.
