Class Experience

Using a mix of discussion, photos, and lectures, I will take students through some of the most interesting ancient civilizations around the world. New museum engagement techniques will be used to help students engage with the material themselves, and hopefully engage with other museum materials in the future! We will begin our discussion of each artifact with a 5-minute individual brainstorm and drawing session with a guiding question. Then, we will discuss our thoughts and I will give students the full background of the piece. We will cover, at a minimum, 3 artifacts/paintings for each culture. All remaining time will be used to survey a few other interesting ancient pieces of my choosing! Students are encouraged to draw artifacts they see during the session - especially if they would like to discuss them with a parent afterward.

This is a SKILL building class. Your student will be exposed to cultures and artifacts from around the world, but this is primarily to work on their skills in analyzing artifacts and things they are unfamiliar with. It is an introduction to different ancient cultures, but an artifact-centered one.

Day 1: Ancient Near East
Day 2: Asian Civilizations
Day 3: Early Global Trading (Will feature Africa & more!)
Day 4: Ancient Americas
Day 5: Ancient Mediterranean (Will include Egypt!)
Learning Goals
Many people think museum collections and artifacts are out of their reach. In this class, students will learn strategies to engage with artifacts in their own way! This is a skill building class, not a content heavy one. The focus will be learning to interpret artifacts independently.

Biography:
Hi! My name is Josée and I am originally from Montréal, Québec, Canada. I always wanted to study archaeology and go on excavations. I have earned a double major in Classics and Italian at Concordia University and a Masters in Classics at Queen’s University. During that time, I worked as a student volunteer in Mytilene, Greece, on a Greek/Roman site. My studies took me to the University of Toronto where I focused on Prehistoric Greek archaeology, and where I gained experience working at the site of Kommos in Crete as a trench supervisor, uncovering the most wonderful buildings and artifacts along with a fantastic team of experts. After my studies, I held a position at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto, Ontario, and I also worked as an assistant to the editor of the Kommos volumes at the excavation headquarters at the University of Toronto. Since then, I have worked as a translator for an art collection in Toronto and as an educator with Scientists in School. I also love to travel. I am so excited to share the fun of archaeology with a group students!
