Artful Thinking at the Museum

Class Experience

When educators talk about ‘Visible Thinking,' they are referring to a broad range of research-based practices that foster students' dispositions and thinking skills. The 'Artful Thinking' routines are practices that focus on looking and discussing works of art while fostering critical thinking skills.

The picture book, 'The Museum,' by Susan Verde sets the stage for learning.

Each day of class, we will:
--Introduce thinking routine.
--Explore a museum. This is through online collections or a virtual tour.
--Introduce the selected piece(s) of artwork.
--Critically think about the artwork for the day using an 'Artful Thinking' routine.
--Create an artistic response related to the day's lesson.

Day 1: Focus on drawings/paintings -- 'The Starry Night,' by Vincent van Gogh.
Thinking Routine -- Colors, Shapes, and Lines
Museum -- Museum of Modern Art

Day 2: Focus on -- 'Autumn Rhythm' by Jackson Pollock
Thinking Routine -- See, Think, Wonder
Museum -- Metropolitan Museum of Art

Day 3: Focus on sculptures --'Play-Doh' by Jeff Koons.
Thinking Routine -- Think, Puzzle, Explore
Museum -- Whitney Museum of American Art
