50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
This is a one-session class that will end with each student having created their own masterpiece that pops up! We will begin class by exploring the famous print, The Great Wave, by the Japanese artist, Hokusai. Then, together we will draw in Hokusai's style to create a vibrant background. Finally we will make and attach our own 3D Great Wave! Throughout the process students are encouraged to add their own creative touches to their artworks. As students work, I always make sure to provide feedback, encouragement, and additional instructions as needed. If time allows, at the end of class our young artists will have the opportunity to share their artwork with their classmates. **Although each demonstration will be finished by the end of class, students may want to continue working on their masterpieces after we have signed off for the day. Everyone works at a different speed, and it's better to take our time than to rush! Supplies Needed: -Colored card stock or thick construction paper (9x12 or 8.5x11) in the following colors: several pieces of blue, orange, yellow, and white (**Colored card stock is recommended to help support the pop up elements.) -Pencil -Scissors -Oil pastels -Glue stick -Clear tape -Empty toilet paper roll (**This is optional and only to hold your picture up if you'd like. A rolled piece of card stock would work too.) -A few paper towels to wipe fingers as we go **You may also want a piece of poster board or large paper to cover the work area.
Learning Goals
-Students will explore the artwork and style of Japanese artist, Hokusai.
-Students will create their own artwork inspired by The Great Wave.
