What's included
Homework
1 hour per week. A fun graphic design project will be assigned each week. The homework can take as short as 10-15 minutes to complete, to hours - depending on how "swept away" they get in the art zone. Many of my students continue creating graphics long after the class is over. Instructions will be given on how to copy the link to the graphic from Canva and paste it in the classroom for review and feedback.Assessment
A learner's progress is assessed with a video that I record which gives feedback, encouragement, and additional challenges to the students to take their designs to the next level.Class Experience
This is a highly creative class where children will get swept away in a "zone" of creativity. Children will love learning and playing with colors, fonts, shapes, backgrounds, animations, sound, and movies and so much more! Please note: this flexible class can be taken by children of any age. The lessons are the same, regardless of age. I have taught this class live with kids and adults in the same class. You can read the reviews of the live version of this class at https://outschool.com/classes/art-zone-digital-graphic-design-with-canva-~-learn-a-powerful-tool-ages-8-13-2vwBYXNa#usVVmcpgJ9. You will see the empowerment the children gain when they create really amazing pieces of art! Your children will continue to use the program long after the session is over to explore and create new artwork. Children do not require any graphic design knowledge to take this class. Each class will give a demonstration of skills and a design will be created. The homework assignment for each class will be to apply these skills and create a design based on the lesson. The classroom is a great place to ask questions, and more importantly, to share the designs that you create. Feedback will be given on all designs submitted. A highlight of my classes is when the designs are shared. The children discover new fonts, photos, animations, and designs that they never thought of before. The students will be asked to give feedback in the classroom on the designs that are submitted by other students. I will record a video and share my screen to show all the designs that are shared and to give constructive feedback on the designs. The free version of Canva is required for this class. Download it at www.canva.com. Children will learn the following in this class: CLASS 1 - INTRODUCTION Fonts, colors, point sizes, backgrounds, transparency, photo gallery + creating an inspirational graphic or message. CLASS 2 - FUN WITH FRAMES! Frames, grouping, spacing, borders, rotating, elements, animating, alignment + creating your name in frames. CLASS 3 - FUN WITH PHOTOS! Uploading photos, getting photos from internet, flipping, cropping, filters, frame styles + creating a photo collage CLASS 4 - FUN WITH ANIMATIONS! Adding music, videos, photo grids, stickers, shapes, gradients + creating a grid design CLASS 5 - SLIDESHOW! Final project slideshow with photos, videos, music, animations, elements, stickers, borders
Learning Goals
Students will learn about fonts, layout, colors, backgrounds, white space, balance, layers, opacity, photo effects, borders, shapes, frames, file formats, and more! Students will learn to design graphics with animations, sounds, movies, and cool effects for reports, social media, invitations, posters, announcements, and just for fun! Even children who find learning boring, or difficult to sit still and pay attention, will be captivated by the infinite creative possibilities of the designs that can be created in Canva. It is a wonderful outlet for children, who will spend hours after the class designing graphics just for fun!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi!
My name is Risa and I LOVE arts & crafts, singing, painting, and graphic design. I am a lifelong learner and I'm interested in history, science, and leadership.
I ALWAYS have an arts & crafts project going on. I am currently creating wearable art by painting beautiful pictures on shirts. I love to knit, paint, do pottery, make jewelry, and many more creative projects.
I have been a website designer and a graphic artist for the past 20 years. I've designed dozens of websites and I've designed hundreds - probably almost a thousand - graphics. I am the owner of several websites, including an e-commerce website, a jewelry information website, and a quote website.
I love working with kids. My greatest pleasure is seeing the joy that kids get when they are in their creative zone- where time flies and their creativity is unleashed - and they are excited and inspired.
I have had children in my classes who pay rapt attention for over an hour, who usually cannot sit still much longer than 20 minutes.
My classes are fun, interesting, and full of possibilities. About 2/3 of the class is spent teaching or demonstrating skills, and the rest of the time is spent on practice, where kids design a graphic on their own and ask questions.
In my science and history classes, the children will apply what is taught by creating storyboards with photos and facts of what we learned.
Using Canva to create graphic designs is a skill that your children will use for the rest of their lives. There is always a reason to create a graphic - whether it is for a report, an invitation, a poster, a brochure, social media, or creating a graphic for special occasions.
Your kids will LOVE the classes that I teach!
